About This Camera

#tab-content img { max-width: 100%; } Overview Specifications Warranty and Return Review

The Pursuit of PerfectionLUMIX GH5 is taking image and video quality to the next level, with the world's first 4K/60p recording and a new 6K Photo function that makes sure you never miss the moment. LUMIX Ambassador Steven Clarey explores new possibilities of photography and videography with the LUMIX GH5, as he captures freesurfer Dion Agius in action in Mozambique.

20.3MP Pixel-Perfect ShooterThe LUMIX GH5 packs a real punch with its high performance Digital Live MOS sensor sporting a whopping 20.3 megapixels to achieve the ultimate picture quality in the history of LUMIX G digital cameras. Together with the removal of the low-pass filter from the sensor, you can confidently capture the sharpest ever imagery with high dynamic range and artifact free. The LUMIX GH5 is a camera of beauty created by you and crafted by Panasonic engineering.

Venus Engine BeautyThe marriage of an advanced Digital Live MOS sensor with the beautiful new Venus Engine 10 reproduces extraordinary colour detail and natural texture expression. Multipixel Luminance Generation and Intelligent Detail Processing renders intense brightness and contrast. The Three-Dimensional Colour Control with rich colours from dark to bright shades and high-precision Multi Process NR makes your images pop. Video users will be impressed with the improved performance in perceptual dynamic range at high ISO sensitivity settings.

Dual Image Stabilizer 2Its difficult to handhold a camera at the best of times but don't fret, with the 5-axis Dual I.S. (Image Stabilizer) 2, intelligent compensation comes to your aid. This is the equivalent to doubling (x5) of exposure duration meaning you can use a 5-stop slower shutter speed up to tele-end. The LUMIX GH5 eliminates shake in both body and lens from wide-angle to tele-end. It also works in both photo and video recording, including 4K video.

World 1st 4K 60p/50p Smooth Quality VideoThe LUMIX GH5 takes professional shooting performance to another level with high-precision, silky smooth 4K 60p/50p (QFHD 4K: 3840 x 2160 / MOV or MP4) video recording capability. Faster frame rates mean excellent motion compensation plus you can slow down footage inside your video editing timeline without losing detail. You also achieve perfect panning control and a suppression of the rolling shutter effect as seen in lesser frame rates.

World 1st 4:2:2 10-bit Internal RecordingThe LUMIX GH5 brings game changing internal 4:2:2 10-bit 4K video recording. For example, 10-bit will render all the subtleties of graduated skies  and sunsets without the banding so prone to 8-bit. The power of having film creation capabilities inside the camera sets a new precedent in guerilla style film-making. And you can record 4:2:2 10-bit to SD card whilst simultaneously feeding the live signal thru a full-size HDMI port connected to an external monitor or recorder.

Ultra Fast Motion Detection & FocusPanasonic's innovative DFD (Depth From Defocus) technology is constantly evolving and its just got even better. DFD allows the LUMIX GH5 to calculate focal lens movement by comparing depth of field values of two images at incredibly high speed. By combining the AF drive with a maximum read speed of 480 fps, the LUMIX GH5 can achieve ultra-high-speed Auto Focus in up to 0.05 seconds and 9 fps burst shooting with AFC (12 fps burst shooting with AFS).

Never Miss a Shot with 6K / 4K BurstShoot with unlimited burst, then choose and extract the exact frames you want to keep. The new 6K PHOTO mode at 30 fps allows you to capture perfect moments at a stunning 18-Mpx (approx) high-resolution. The Ultra-high-speed 4K PHOTO mode at 60 fps freezes even faster motion which is simply not possible in conventional cameras. The LUMIX GH5 truly does make moments unmissable.

Rugged Design - Splash / Dust / FreezeproofThe LUMIX GH5 is built like a tank to withstand even heavy use out in the field. It is freezeproof down to -10-degrees, in addition, it has a splash / dustproof construction thanks to weather sealing on every joint, dial, and button. A magnesium alloy full diecast armor frame makes the body lightweight yet durable while bringing ruggedness to the compact size. This camera can go everywhere you can.

3,680K-dot, Large OLED LVFA super high-resolution 3,680K-dot OLED LVF (Live View Finder) brings gorgeous visibility and makes for perfect framing even under direct sunlight. A high 0.76x magnification (35 mm camera equivalent) makes it easy-to-see image detail, your settings and icons, and, the long eye point distance of 21 mm is excellent for people who wear spectacles. Best of all, the OLED LVF ensures your pictures match up to exactly how you intended them.

The 30-Second Version

The GH5 is the battered, beloved workhorse of the indie film world. Buy it for the video, stay for the battery life, but bring your own manual focus skills.

Overview

Panasonic's GH5 is a video-first mirrorless camera that refuses to die. Even years after launch, it remains a favorite for indie filmmakers thanks to its uncropped 4K 60fps, 10-bit internal recording, and class-leading stabilization. It's not the stills king, and the autofocus will drive you mad if you rely on it, but for pure video bang-for-buck, nothing in its price range touches it.

We've been tracking this thing in our database for years, and while newer models have surpassed it in resolution and AF speed, the GH5's build, battery life, and video features still make it a ridiculous value on the used market. If you can live without perfect tracking, you'll get a tool that punches above its weight class.

Performance

We were genuinely surprised by how well this camera holds up for action. The 12fps mechanical burst and deep buffer won't top the charts, but pair them with that 96th-percentile battery life and you've got a setup that can shoot sports or wildlife all day on a single charge. That's something even some $2,000 bodies can't match. The 3.68M-dot EVF is also a standout, sharp and huge, making it easy to track subjects in bright light. Just don't expect the sensor to keep up in dim conditions, low light is not its friend.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Class-leading battery life for all-day video and burst shooting 96th
  • Superb 3.68M-dot EVF that rivals far pricier cameras 96th
  • Robust weather-sealed body built like a tank 95th
  • Uncropped 4K 60fps 10-bit internal recording with Log profiles 93th

Cons

  • Contrast-detect AF hunts and pulses in video, unreliable for moving subjects
  • Micro Four Thirds sensor struggles in low light compared to APS-C rivals
  • Mediocre product and still-life sharpness, it's in the bottom half for sensor quality
  • No reliable subject-tracking autofocus for sports, you'll miss shots

The Word on the Street

4.5/5 (551 reviews)
👍 Indie creators still love the GH5 for its reliable 4K 60fps and 10-bit internal recording that beats many newer bodies in its price class.
👎 A common frustration is the contrast-detect autofocus, which hunts badly in video and makes vlogging or run-and-gun shooting a chore.
🤔 Some photographers appreciate the rugged build and stabilization, but admit the sensor resolution feels dated for stills work.

Value & Pricing

At its current used prices (we've seen as low as $700), the GH5 is a flat-out steal for video shooters. The lens bundle with the Leica 12-60mm is an especially sweet deal. But prices are all over the map, with some sellers asking absurd amounts like $200k (we assume that's a typo). Stick to reputable stores and you'll get a production-ready camera for the price of a point-and-shoot.

vs Competition

The Sony Alpha 6700 offers way better autofocus and cleaner low-light images, but its rolling shutter and overheating in 4K 120p can be dealbreakers for serious video work. The Fujifilm X-H2 gives you a massive resolution bump and similar video chops, but at almost double the price. For pure video reliability and ruggedness, the GH5 still holds its own, especially if you're building a kit on a budget and don't need the latest AF wizardry.

Common Questions

Q: Is the GH5 still good for video in 2024?

Absolutely, if you don't need flawless autofocus. It shoots 4K 60fps without a crop, 10-bit 4:2:2 internally, and has amazing IBIS. For interviews, short films, and documentaries, it's still a powerhouse.

Q: How does the GH5 compare to the Sony A7 III for hybrid use?

The Sony A7 III is better for stills and low light, but the GH5 destroys it for video features. You get 10-bit internal, no recording limits, and better stabilization. If video is your priority, GH5. If photos come first, go Sony.

Q: Is the autofocus really that bad?

It's fine for static subjects or pulling focus manually, but for tracking faces or fast movement, it's unreliable. If you shoot sports or need continuous AF in video, get a camera with phase-detect like the Sony A6700.

Who Should Skip This

If you mainly shoot stills or need fast, reliable autofocus for vlogging or sports, the GH5 isn't your camera. The 20MP Micro Four Thirds sensor feels cramped for high-res photography, and product photography scores are abysmal. Look at the Sony Alpha 6700 or Fujifilm X-H2 instead.

Verdict

If you're a filmmaker on a budget or need a B-cam that can handle rain, dust, and all-day shoots without breaking a sweat, the GH5 is still a top pick. Just don't buy it expecting great stills or reliable face tracking. It's a video workhorse, period.
