The 30-Second Version
Beautifully built, but the 6-bit color makes it look like a monitor from 2010. Paying nearly $400 for this panel in 2025 is a tough sell.
Overview
The MSI Optix MAG162V is a frustrating little monitor. It's built like an expensive aluminum slab, weighs less than a MacBook Air, and works flawlessly as a second screen for web browsing, Discord, or keeping an eye on Spotify. But then you look at the specs: 6-bit color, 250 nits brightness, and a price tag that brushes up against $400. It's like putting a lawnmower engine in a sports car chassis—the foundation is fantastic, but the performance doesn't back it up. This is a monitor you buy because you love the build, not because you care about what you're actually looking at.
Performance
I was genuinely surprised by how portable and well-made this thing is. At just under 2 pounds and barely thicker than a pencil, it slides into a bag like it's nothing. The aluminum unibody feels premium in a way that cheap plastic portable monitors don't. But the display itself is a letdown. 250 nits is dim even indoors near a window, and the 6-bit panel means you're seeing color banding on gradients and flat, lifeless reds and blues. It's in the 1st percentile for color—dead last among monitors we've tested. For basic tasks it's fine, but it's the kind of fine you'd expect from a $150 monitor, not one approaching $400.

Value & Pricing
This is where it hurts. You're paying $355 to $397 for a portable monitor that gets smoked on image quality by options costing half as much. The build is great, but you're paying a premium for the MSI badge and that aluminum shell. Unless you're willing to drop nearly $400 on a monitor purely because it's well-built and has two USB-C ports, it's hard to call this good value.
vs Competition
The obvious alternative is the Lenovo ThinkVision M14. It's also 14 inches, but has a brighter, 8-bit panel with far better color, and it costs about the same. You lose an inch of screen and the second USB-C port, but you gain actual usable color. If you want to stay at 15.6 inches and save money, the AOC I1659FWUX is often under $200, is also portable, and while it's plastic, at least you're not paying a premium for a bad panel. The MSI only makes sense if you absolutely need the dual USB-C and the tank-like build, and even then, I'd think twice.

Common Questions
Q: Can I power it with a single USB-C cable?
Yep. One of the USB-C ports handles both video and power from a laptop or phone that supports DP Alt mode. It's super clean—no separate power brick needed.
Q: Is this monitor good for photo editing or design work?
Absolutely not. The 6-bit panel can only show 262K colors, and the accuracy is atrocious. You'd be guessing at skin tones and gradients. Get something with at least 8-bit and better coverage—like the ASUS ProArt series.
Q: Does it work with a Nintendo Switch or game console?
It works, but with caveats. The Switch can connect via the mini HDMI port (you'll need an adapter) or through USB-C if the console is in dock mode and your USB-C cable supports DP Alt mode. The 60Hz limit is fine for Switch gaming, though.
Who Should Skip This
If you care at all about color accuracy or brightness, skip this entirely. Go grab something like the ASUS ZenScreen MB16ACV—it's not aluminum, but it has an 8-bit panel and actually shows you colors that look right. Or if you're on a budget, the AOC I1659FWUX is a much smarter buy.
Verdict
The MSI Optix MAG162V is a niche monitor for a niche buyer. If you're a gamer who wants a second screen for Discord and guides, and you're willing to pay for something that feels incredible in your hands, it might be your thing. Everyone else should run away from that 6-bit panel. It's 2025, and a $400 monitor without proper color is just not acceptable.
