Wer bereit ist, zwei Ersatzakkus einzustecken, bekommt aber eine extrem potente und leichte Kamera für einen unwiderstehlichen Preis.
Überblick
Die Canon EOS R8 ist eine Vollformat-Kamera, die vor allem mit dem Autofokus überzeugt: 1053 AF-Punkte, Eye-AF und eine Treffsicherheit, die zur absoluten Spitze gehört. In unserer Datenbank erreicht sie das 98. Perzentil – nur zwei Prozent aller Kameras dieser Klasse fokussieren schneller und präziser. Dazu kommen 40 Bilder pro Sekunde im Serienmodus, ein fantastischer OLED-Sucher im 100. Perzentil und ein Gewicht von gerade mal 408 Gramm – das ist leichter als so manche APS-C-Kamera. Der Haken: die Akkulaufzeit. Mit nur etwa 150 Aufnahmen pro Ladung landet sie im Bereich, den wir sonst nur von Spielzeugkameras kennen.
Auch beim Video überzeugt die R8 mit 4K60p in 10-Bit und Canon Log 3 und landet in unseren Tests im 80. Perzentil – stark, aber nicht ganz an der Spitze. Das Fehlen eines mechanischen IBIS wird von vielen Nutzern bemängelt; die Stabilisierung im Zusammenspiel mit digitalem IS und stabilisierten Objektiven erreicht dennoch das 94. Perzentil und reicht für die meisten Situationen. Bei Hochzeiten oder Events stößt sie dagegen an ihre Grenzen, dafür ist sie mit 92,3 von 100 Punkten eine echte Vlogging-Maschine.
Leistung
Der Autofokus ist die absolute Paradedisziplin der R8. Er erfasst Motive in durchschnittlich 0,05 Sekunden und hält selbst bei hektischen Bewegungen bombenfest – das ist Best-in-Class und schlägt selbst teurere Brocken wie die Sony a7 V. Im Serienbildmodus feuert die Kamera 40 fps im elektronischen Verschluss ab, genug um jede Action-Szene sezierbar zu machen. Der Rolling-Shutter-Effekt ist dabei spürbar, aber für die meisten Einsatzzwecke verkraftbar.
Videografen freuen sich über internes 4K60p mit 10-Bit 4:2:2 und Canon Log 3 – Farben, die man in der Postproduktion nach Herzenslust verbiegen kann. Allerdings überhitzt die Kamera nach rund 25 Minuten Daueraufnahme, und ein Lüfter fehlt. Der elektronische Sucher mit 2,36 Millionen Bildpunkten setzt Maßstäbe: kein anderer EVF in dieser Klasse löst so fein auf und reagiert so verzögerungsfrei.

Gegen die Sony a7 V sticht die R8 durch ihr geringeres Gewicht (408 vs. 658 Gramm) und den überlegenen EVF hervor, muss sich aber beim Akku (150 vs. ca. 600 Auslösungen) und beim fehlenden IBIS klar geschlagen geben. Die Panasonic GH7 bietet mit ihrem aktiven Kühlsystem und ProRes-Video deutlich mehr für reine Filmer, ist aber schwerer und teurer. Die Fujifilm X-H2S punktet mit Stacked-Sensor und kaum Rolling Shutter, kostet aber ebenfalls deutlich mehr. Und die Nikon Z8 spielt in einer völlig anderen Liga, ist aber auch doppelt so schwer und teuer.
