Sigma Contemporary 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Review

If you're shooting portraits or street scenes on a Fujifilm APS-C camera and you want that creamy, blurred-background look on a budget, this Sigma 30mm f/1.4 is your lens. It's basically a 45mm equivalent, which is a classic focal length for a reason. The one thing you need to know is that it's a specialist, not a generalist. It's built to make your subject pop with beautiful bokeh, and it's really good at that one job.

The big surprise here is just how good the bokeh is. It scores in the 91st percentile, which is fantastic for the price. The f/1.4 aperture lets in a ton of light, so it's great in low light too. But the autofocus is a bit of a letdown, landing in the 47th percentile. It's not slow, but it's not the snappiest or quietest system out there, especially compared to some native Fuji glass.

At $419, this lens is a solid value. You're getting pro-level bokeh and a fast aperture at a price well below most Fujifilm-branded primes. You do make some compromises, mainly with autofocus speed and a lack of sealing, but the core image quality is absolutely worth it.

The most direct competitor is the Viltrox 35mm f/1.7. It's cheaper and has a slightly tighter field of view, but its bokeh and build quality generally don't match the Sigma. If you want a more versatile, all-around prime from Fuji, look at something like the XF 35mm f/2. It's sharper, has faster autofocus, and is weather-sealed, but you lose that f/1.4 light-gathering and bokeh magic. The Sigma is the clear choice if your priority is rendering and background blur over speed and sealing.

Buy this lens. If you're a portrait or street photographer using Fujifilm's APS-C system and you crave that beautiful, soft background blur, the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 delivers where it counts. Just be ready for its autofocus to be merely adequate, and don't even think about using it for landscapes.
