Viltrox 27mm f/1.2 Review

The Viltrox 27mm f/1.2 is a big, fast prime for Nikon Z APS-C cameras. It gives you a classic 40mm full-frame equivalent field of view, which is great for everyday shooting and portraits. This lens is all about that massive f/1.2 aperture, letting in a ton of light and creating super shallow depth of field. Just know it's hefty at over 540 grams and lacks any weather sealing, so it's a bit of a specialist tool.

The optical performance is where this lens shines, landing in the 87th percentile. That f/1.2 aperture is in the 96th percentile, so low-light performance is fantastic and the bokeh quality is creamy and smooth. The autofocus is just okay, sitting around average, and there's no stabilization at all. So for video or shaky hands, you're relying on your camera body. It's not a macro lens either, with a minimum focus distance of about 28cm.

At around $578, this lens asks a serious question. You're paying for that exceptional f/1.2 aperture and the optical quality that comes with it. Compared to first-party Nikon Z glass, it's often cheaper for similar or better speed. But you're giving up things like weather sealing and potentially snappier AF. If you absolutely need f/1.2 on APS-C, it's a compelling option. If you don't, there are lighter and cheaper alternatives.

Stack it up against its main rivals. The Viltrox 35mm f/1.7 is much smaller, lighter, and cheaper, but you lose over a stop of light. The Meike 55mm f/1.8 is a different focal length but offers full-frame coverage and solid build. First-party options from Nikon, like a 28mm f/2.8, will be tiny and sealed but much slower. This 27mm f/1.2 carves its niche by being the speed king for Nikon Z crop sensors, but you carry the weight for it.

Buy this if you're a Nikon Z APS-C shooter who lives for portraits or low-light work and you crave that f/1.2 look above all else. It's a specialist lens. Skip it if you're a traveler who values a light kit, or if you need weather sealing for outdoor shoots. For general walkaround use, its heft and lack of stabilization make it a harder sell.
