Viltrox Fujinon XF VILTROX 9mm F2.8 XF-Mount APS-C Lens for Fuji, Review

The Viltrox 9mm F2.8 offers a wildly creative ultra-wide perspective for Fuji cameras at a bargain price, but its slow autofocus and bulky design mean it's not for everyone.

Overview

The Viltrox 9mm F2.8 is a weird, wonderful, and incredibly niche lens. It's not your everyday carry, but if you're looking for a single tool to make your photos look dramatically different, this is it. The one thing to know is that its 113.8-degree field of view is absolutely massive. You'll either love the creative challenge or find it completely overwhelming.

Performance

What surprised me is how sharp this thing is for the price. The optics are in the 81st percentile, and you can see it. The corners hold up pretty well even at F2.8, which is impressive for such an extreme wide-angle. The stabilization is also shockingly good, landing in the 89th percentile. It lets you handhold shots in low light you'd normally need a tripod for, which is crucial because the autofocus, frankly, isn't great.

Value & Pricing

At $199, this lens is a steal for what it does. You're getting unique optics and great stabilization for less than half the price of Fujifilm's own ultra-wide options. Just know you're trading off autofocus performance and portability.

vs Competition

Don't compare this to standard primes. The real choice is between this and Fujifilm's own XF 10-24mm F4. The Fuji is more versatile, has better AF, and is weather-sealed, but it's also over three times the price and a stop slower. If you need that zoom range and pro features, save up for the Fuji. If you want the widest possible view on a budget and can live with the quirks, the Viltrox wins easily. The Meike and Viltrox 35mm lenses listed are different tools entirely for portraits and low light.

Verdict

Buy this lens if you're a Fuji shooter craving a new creative perspective and you're on a tight budget. It's a specialist tool that forces you to see differently, and the image quality is fantastic for the money. But if you need reliable autofocus for fast-paced shooting or want a lens you can take anywhere, look elsewhere. This one's for the adventurous photographers.
