Leica SL2 Leica SL2 47MP Mirrorless Full-Frame Camera (Body Review
The Leica SL2 feels incredible and takes breathtaking photos, but its dated autofocus and sky-high price make it a tough sell for most shooters.
Overview
The Leica SL2 is a stunningly built camera that makes you feel like you're holding a piece of German engineering art. But you're paying a premium for that feeling and a legendary sensor, because in a lot of practical, modern features, it's playing catch-up. The one thing to know is this: if you're a photographer who values ultimate image quality and a no-compromise build over speed and convenience, this is your tool. If you need a do-it-all workhorse, look elsewhere.
Performance
The 47MP sensor is predictably incredible, landing in the 99th percentile. Your photos will have a depth and clarity that's hard to match. What surprised me, though, was how good the video specs are on paper—5K and 10-bit color is serious. But then you remember the autofocus is in the 44th percentile, and that video dream gets a lot more complicated. It's a powerhouse held back by its own legacy tech in some key areas.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Image quality is simply top-tier. That 47MP sensor is a gem. 99th
- Build quality is insane. It's a tank that feels like it'll outlive you. 96th
- Video specs are surprisingly deep and professional-grade. 90th
- The redesigned menu is actually logical, a huge win for Leica. 88th
Cons
- The autofocus is dated. Don't expect to track fast action reliably.
- For the price, the EVF and display are just average.
- Burst shooting is slow, so it's not a sports camera.
- You're paying a massive 'red dot' premium for the brand.

Value & Pricing
At over $5,000 for just the body, the value proposition is brutal. You're not paying for the best all-around camera. You're paying for a specific experience and that Leica image look. For most people, that's not worth it.
vs Competition
Stack it against the Sony A7R IV, and the choice gets clear. The Sony has more resolution (61MP), vastly superior autofocus, and a much deeper lens ecosystem, all for less money. The Canon EOS R6 Mark II is the other obvious competitor. It smokes the SL2 in autofocus, burst shooting, and video usability, though its sensor is lower resolution. The Leica wins on pure build and that intangible 'feel,' but in a head-to-head spec shootout, it loses.
Verdict
I can only recommend the Leica SL2 to a very specific buyer: a photographer with deep pockets who prioritizes still image quality and physical craftsmanship above all else, and who doesn't rely on cutting-edge autofocus. For everyone else—especially hybrid shooters or anyone on a budget—there are better, more capable tools that cost significantly less.
