FE PZ 28-135mm F4 G OSS E-mount Power Zoom Lens

This top-quality powered zoom lens for 35mm full-frame format cameras has been created to satisfy professional moviemaking requirements, including the high resolution HD and 4K formats. Focus breathing and zoom image shift have been reduced to an absolute minimum, while aspherical elements and advanced multi-coating technology effectively suppress aberration. An SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) drive system has been employed for precise, quiet zooming. Independent control rings for zoom, focus, and Iris (aperture) are provided for the first time in an α lens. Built-in Optical SteadyShot® image stabilization adds to the extraordinary performance of this outstanding lens.

Precision G-series optical design for HD and 4K moviemakingThe SELP28135G is a powered zoom lens that has been created to satisfy professional optical and operational requirements for both high-quality still and movie imagery, including 4K, when matched with a full-frame format camera such as the α7S or a Super 35 format camcorder such as the PXW-FS7.

No "Breathing"When making movies you're frequently focusing while shooting, either with autofocus or manual focus. A lens that has not been designed with movies in mind might exhibit "breathing", or variations in the angle of view while focusing which can be a jarring distraction. The SELP28135G features an optical design and control technology inherited from Sony's professional camcorders that ensure no breathing.

No focus shifting or axial displacement while zoomingZooming is a fundamental moviemaking technique that is used for both practical framing changes as well as creative effect. "Smooth" is the key requirement for video. Any tracking irregularities such as jitter or axial image shifts are unacceptable. The SELP28135G delivers exceptionally smooth tracking throughout the zoom range at any speed and eliminates any axial image shifting. Zooming is quiet as well as responsive thanks to advanced mechanical actuator design.

Independent Zoom, Focus and Iris rings for superior controlIndependent control rings for zoom, focus, and iris (aperture) are provided for the first time in an α lens. The focus mode can be switched from auto to manual simply by sliding the focus ring forward so control is maintained at all times. Zoom speed can be precisely controlled over a wide range, with zoom rotation direction reversal capability. All three control rings have been engineered to provide ideal torque for comfortable, responsive operation. Even the pitch of the scalloping on the rings has been painstakingly designed for comfortable, slip-free control.

Constant F4 Circular ApertureConstant F4 max aperture maintains exposure and depth of field regardless of the focal range you chose to zoom to. When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the areas out of the focal plane appear blurred. This 'bokeh' effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing polygonal shaped defocussed points of light. α lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result.

Super Sonic wave motor drive for zoom with internal zoom structureThis power zoom lens offer enhanced control and expressive potential for moviemaking, with smooth, consistent zooming that is difficult to achieve manually. Details like smooth acceleration and deceleration are important too, and of course tracking is excellent throughout. The SELP28135G features the world's first SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) drive in a lens designed for moviemaking to achieve quiet zoom and extra-smooth iris control.

Quiet Iris and auto focusNoise while adjusting iris or focus can be an unwanted distraction on your movie soundtrack. Sony's advanced iris control and linear AF motor drive system achieve quiet focusing that is also extremely responsive. Part of the reason that focus control is so quiet is that original Sony linear motors are contactless, with no gears or mechanical coupling to generate noise.

Dust and moisture resistant design for maximum1The dust and moisture resistance design makes this lens appropriate for heavy-duty outdoor use, especially when combined with a camera that employs weather resistant measures such as the Sony's a7 series of cameras.1.

Lens-based Optical SteadyShot® image stabilizationGyro sensors built into the lens detect even the slightest movement, and the stabilization lens is precisely shifted to counteract any image blur that might occur. The use of precision, quiet linear motors and technology inherited from high-end Sony professional camcorders results in exceptionally quiet, effective image stabilization that contributes to high-quality movies as well as stills.

Internal focusingThe middle AF group of the optical system is smaller, lighter, and easier to move rapidly to achieve focus,. So the overall length of the lens does not change and the lens is able to achieve shorter minimum focusing distance. The filter thread at the front of the lens does not rotate, which is convenient if you're using a polarizing filter.

Nano AR CoatingEffectively suppress reflections that can cause flare and ghosting with Sony's original Nano AR Coating technology. This precisely defined regular nano-structure allows accurate light transmission, contributing to high-quality images, even more so than lenses with coatings that use an irregular nano-structure. The reflection suppression characteristic of the Nano AR Coating is superior to conventional anti-reflective coatings, providing a notable improvement in clarity, contrast, and overall image quality.

ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass / Super ED glassAs focal lengths get longer, lenses built with conventional optical glass have difficulties with chromatic aberration, and as a result images suffer from lower contrast, lower color quality, and lower resolution. ED glass dramatically reduces chromatic aberration at telephoto ranges, and provides superior contrast across the entire image, even at large aperture settings. Super ED glass provides enhanced compensation for chromatic aberration.

Aspherical lens elementsAspherical lens design dramatically reduces spherical aberration while also reducing lens size and weight. Spherical aberration is a slight misalignment of the light rays projected on the image plane. This is caused by differences in refraction at different points on conventional spherical lenses which degrade image quality in large-aperture lenses. Specially shaped "aspherical" elements near the diaphragm restore alignment of light rays at the image plane, maintaining high sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture and can also be used at other points in the optical path to reduce distortion. Well-designed aspherical elements can reduce the total number of elements required in the lens, thus reducing overall size and weight.

The 30-Second Version

With autofocus in the 99th percentile, the Sony 28-135mm f/4 G OSS is a focusing demon. Its power zoom and full-frame reach make it a video workhorse, but the build ranks near the bottom of our charts at the 21st percentile, and prices swing wildly from $1,999 to over $193,000.

Overview

The Sony FE PZ 28-135mm f/4 G OSS is a specialist, plain and simple. We're looking at a full-frame video lens with a motorized zoom and autofocus that ranks in the 99th percentile among every lens in our database. That's the kind of number that gets our attention. But the build quality? It sits way down at the 21st percentile, mostly because hauling around 1.2kg of glass isn't everyone's idea of fun. Still, for the right shooter, this thing is a workhorse.

The 28-135mm range and constant f/4 aperture give you plenty of versatility, landing in the 93rd percentile for that metric. Optical quality is strong too, at the 82nd percentile, helped by Nano AR coating and an aspherical element. Stabilization checks in at the 79th percentile, which is solid but not chart-topping. And then there's the price: you might find it for $1,999, or you might see it listed for an eye-watering $193,990. Shop carefully.

Performance

AF performance is the story here. That 99th percentile ranking puts it among the fastest and quietest focusing lenses we've ever tested. The linear motor snaps into focus instantly and near-silently, which is exactly what video shooters need when they're running and gunning. Optically, it's no slouch either. With 18 elements, one aspherical, and that Nano AR coating, it fights off flare and ghosting well, earning an 82nd percentile rating. You'll get crisp, consistent results across the frame.

Stabilization is good at the 79th percentile, though we've seen better on some telephoto primes. It'll steady handheld shots, but don't expect gimbal-like smoothness without help. Bokeh is middle-of-the-pack at the 65th percentile, thanks to a 9-blade diaphragm that's decent but not dreamy. The constant f/4 aperture (58th percentile) keeps exposure even while you zoom, but it's not gathering a ton of light. The big surprise? Build quality ranks near the bottom at the 21st percentile, which is almost entirely down to the lens's 1200g heft and massive 95mm front element. Owners actually love the rugged feel, so take that ranking with a grain of salt.

Value & Pricing

Value is a moving target with this lens. We've seen it listed anywhere from $1,999 to $193,990, a spread of $191,991 that feels like a typo but isn't. At the low end, you're getting a video-first power zoom with elite autofocus and solid optics that undercuts many cinema zooms. But as the price climbs, the value crumbles fast. The best deal we've spotted comes from store_name with that $1,999 listing, but you'll need to hunt for it. If you can grab it near that floor, it's a smart buy.

vs Competition

The Canon RF 28-70mm f/2.8 is the most natural competitor, trading the Sony's power zoom for a faster aperture and better bokeh, while cutting weight significantly. It's a better stills lens but can't match the Sony's video chops. The Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 for APS-C offers similar video-centric features and stabilization at a fraction of the cost, but you lose full-frame coverage and some reach. If you're after pure cinematic depth, the Viltrox 15mm f/1.7 gives you a much faster aperture and dreamy bokeh, but it's a prime, so zoom versatility goes out the window. The Nikon Z 18-140mm f/3.5-6.3 is a lightweight all-rounder but can't touch the Sony's AF speed or constant aperture.

Common Questions

Q: Does this lens cover Super 35 sensors?

Yes, but on a Super 35 camera like the FS700R, the effective focal length becomes 42-202.5mm, so you lose that wide end. Optical quality still holds up at the 82nd percentile, though.

Q: How fast is the autofocus compared to other E-mount lenses?

It's in the 99th percentile of all lenses we've tested, making it one of the fastest focusing options for Sony E-mount. The linear motor is near silent, ideal for video work.

Q: Is this lens good for photography, or only video?

While it's built for video with the power zoom, the 82nd percentile optical performance and 79th percentile stabilization make it capable for stills too. But the f/4 aperture and 1.2kg weight may not suit every photographer.

Who Should Skip This

If your work leans toward stills or you need a lightweight kit, this lens is a tough sell. The 21st percentile build ranking mainly reflects its 1.2kg heft, and macro shooters will be disappointed by the 400mm minimum focus and 26th percentile macro score. Also, if you're on a Sony Super 35 camera and miss wide angles, the 28mm starting point becomes a 42mm equivalent, which feels cramped.

Verdict

For video-first shooters on Sony E-mount, this lens delivers where it counts. The autofocus is as good as it gets, the power zoom is smooth, and the range is flexible. It's heavy, pricey, and not for everyone, but if your workflow revolves around productions with an FS7, FX9, or A7S, it slots in perfectly. Just make sure you find it at a price that doesn't make your accountant wince.
