MSI Katana 15.6" A15 AI Gaming Laptop 15.6” Review

The MSI Katana A15 AI is a gaming laptop that tries to do it all. It packs a Ryzen 9 8945HS and an RTX 4070 into a 15.6-inch frame, promising serious power for the price.

You get a sharp QHD 165Hz screen and 32GB of DDR5 RAM right out of the box. It's built for long gaming sessions, but at over 4 kilos, you won't be carrying this thing around lightly.

The RTX 4070 and Ryzen 9 combo is no joke. You're looking at 86th percentile GPU performance, so modern games at QHD with high settings are totally doable. The CPU is solid too, landing in the 77th percentile. Just know that the cooling fans get loud when you push it, and that 8GB of VRAM on the 4070 might feel tight in a year or two for maxed-out textures.

At around $1400, this is a strong value if raw gaming power is your top priority. You're getting specs that usually cost more. The catch is you're trading portability and some refinement for that performance. If you need a true desktop replacement, it's worth it. If you travel a lot, maybe not.

Compared to a Lenovo Legion Pro 7i, the Katana might have a slight edge in pure price-to-performance, but the Legion often has better build quality and cooling. The ASUS Zenbook Duo is in a different league for creators needing dual screens, but it can't game like this. Against MSI's own Vector 16 HX, the Katana is the more budget-focused option, while the Vector aims for a higher-tier experience with potentially better thermals.

Buy this if you want a powerful, mostly stationary gaming rig and don't mind the weight and fan noise. It's perfect for a dorm room or a dedicated desk setup. Look elsewhere if you need something portable or if a quieter machine is important to you.
