The Panasonic G100D delivers excellent stabilization, crisp audio, and a compact vlogging-friendly design at a low entry price. But lousy battery life, archaic autofocus, and a stubborn recording cap undercut it. At $509 it's a solid deal, at anything more it's a pass.

The Panasonic G100D is a tiny mirrorless camera aimed squarely at vloggers and streamers who want something better than a phone without breaking the bank. It bundles a 12-32mm kit lens, a bag, and a memory card, so you can start shooting right out of the box. Our database shows it's wildly popular for social content, with solid connectivity and surprisingly good stabilization for its size.

But this thing has some rough edges Panasonic never bothered to sand down. The battery life is terrible, the autofocus feels like it's from 2015, and that 20-minute recording limit will drive you nuts if you do long takes. We'll get into all of it.

The 20.3MP Micro Four Thirds sensor is middle of the pack in our database, so stills are fine in good light but get noisy fast indoors. Burst shooting is a bright spot, 10fps mechanical and 30fps electronic are both well above average, and the IBIS delivers a real 5 stops of shake reduction that smooths out handheld video beautifully. Video tops out at 4K30p with V-LogL installed, which is decent but not class-leading. The 3-inch articulating touchscreen is bright and flexible, and the OLED EVF is crisp at 2.36M dots. Then you hit the wall: 49 contrast-detect AF points that struggle with moving subjects, a paltry 270 shots per charge (dead last among similar cameras), and a plasticky body with zero weather sealing. For casual vlogging this kit works, but push it and the weak spots show up fast.

This camera's price bounces all over the place, vendors have it listed anywhere from $509 to $1490. At the low end, especially with the lens and accessories included, it's a steal if you can live with the shortcomings. You're getting capable 4K, decent audio, and genuinely good stabilization for less than a used premium phone. But if you pay anywhere near the top of that range, you're getting fleeced, there are far better bodies like the Sony a6700 just a little more. Grab it from the cheapest reputable seller and treat it as a budget vlogging tool, not a do-everything camera.

Stack this up against the Sony a6700 and the pain becomes obvious. The Sony's autofocus is leagues ahead, its battery lasts ages, and it shoots oversampled 4K 60, but it costs a lot more. The Fujifilm X-S20 offers better video specs and film simulations in a similar small body, though its IBIS isn't quite as steady. Canon's EOS R7 is a bigger, weather-sealed beast with far superior photo chops, but it's heavier and pricier. Even the OM System OM-5 Mark II outclasses the G100D in build and AF while staying in the Micro Four Thirds family. The Panasonic holds its own only if your priorities are tiny size, good audio, and rock-bottom price, everywhere else, the competition has moved on.

If you need reliable continuous autofocus for sports, wildlife, or kids, look elsewhere because the G100D's contrast-detect system will drive you mad. Skip it also if you shoot long events or interviews, the battery and recording limit make it impractical. And if you work outdoors in rough weather, the lack of sealing is a dealbreaker.

Get the G100D if you're a streamer, vlogger, or content creator who shoots short clips in controlled settings and values portability above all. The IBIS and OZO audio let you leave the gimbal and external mic at home, and the small body won't scare people off in public. Just budget for a couple extra batteries and accept that you'll be restarting recordings every 20 minutes.
