Overzicht
De Vanquisher EX-8 is een tablet die je niet zomaar in de elektronica-schappen tegenkomt. Dit is een bewust lomp, stug apparaat dat bedoeld is voor landmeters, monteurs en iedereen die een Windows-apparaat nodig heeft op plekken waar een iPad binnen een dag zou sneuvelen. Met een IP65-classificatie, een verwijderbare batterij, stylus en volwaardige GPS-module richt de EX-8 zich volledig op de enterprise-werker die onderweg data moet vastleggen. Hij draait Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC, een uitgeklede, vergrendelde versie van Windows die je normaal op geldautomaten of digitale signage tegenkomt, niet op een tablet. En dat is juist de kracht ervan, mits je precies weet waar je aan begint.
Er schuilt namelijk een geheim onder de rubberen bumper: de Intel N100-processor. Die chip is energiezuinig maar hoort, op basis van onze database, bij de allergrootste achterblijvers. We hebben duizenden apparaten getest en de N100 belandt in de onderste twee procent van alle cpu's die we ooit hebben gezien. Dat is niet per se een fout in een robuust veldapparaat, want een simpele data-invoer-app loopt heus niet vast, maar het zet meteen de toon. Wie gewend is aan de snelheid van een moderne Surface of iPad zal zich kapot schrikken van hoe traag dit ding opstart en schakelt tussen taken.
Toch heeft de Vanquisher een schare fans die exact deze combi zoeken: robuustheid, Windows, en zakelijke inzetbaarheid. De prijs zakt op Amazon naar ongeveer 650 dollar, al zagen we één verkoper die 189.414 dollar vroeg, een getal dat zo absurd is dat we stiekem hopen dat er een gouden stylus bij zit. Voor het eerlijke bedrag krijg je een 8-inch 1920x1200 scherm dat met 550 nits ook buiten leesbaar is, 8 GB werkgeheugen, 128 GB trage eMMC-opslag, en connectiviteit waar je u tegen zegt: Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, 4G LTE en U-blox GPS. Dat netwerkpakket is zonder twijfel het absolute topsegment binnen onze database.
Prestaties
De cijfers liegen niet: de Intel N100 is misschien verdubbeld in snelheid ten opzichte van een ouder EOL-model, zoals de fabrikant trots meldt, maar tegenover de concurrentie blijft het tobben. De processor staat in onze benchmarks op het niveau van de traagste chips die we hebben gemeten, goed voor een score die lager is dan 98% van alles wat we hebben getest. In de praktijk betekent dat dat Windows 11 IoT LTSC weliswaar opstart binnen een minuut, maar dat je bij het openen van een tweede of derde simpele applicatie al snel het zandlopertje ziet. Het is te vergelijken met een instap-laptop van vijf jaar geleden, en dat voel je bij elke tik op het scherm. De geïntegreerde grafische chip zit in dezelfde kelderklasse (vijfde percentiel), dus verwacht geen vloeiende kaart-animaties of grafisch intensieve veldsoftware. Voor puur datatypwerk, navigatie en het uitlezen van sensoren is het net genoeg.
De 8 inch full-hd display is met 550 nits helder genoeg voor een bewolkte dag, maar op een zonnige bouwplaats moet je toch je hand erboven houden. De kleurweergave en kijkhoeken zijn prima voor een industrieel apparaat, maar als je net een iPad gewend bent, ziet het er allemaal wat flets en blauwig uit. De 5000 mAh batterij is verwijderbaar, wat handig is voor een lange werkdag, maar de capaciteit is matig. Onze metingen plaatsen de accuduur in de onderste 31 procent van alle tablets; reken op een uurtje of 5 bij gemengd gebruik, wat voor veldwerk vaak net te krap is. De prijs van de Vanquisher EX-8 is eigenlijk een raadsel. Op Amazon vind je aanbiedingen vanaf ongeveer 650 dollar, maar er duikt ook een obscure verkoper op die 189.414 dollar rekent. We gaan ervan uit dat die laatste een fout is of een verdwaalde placeholder. Voor die 650 dollar krijg je een complete rugged tablet met Windows IoT, wat op dit moment best scherp is, want een robuuste Android-tablet van Panasonic of Getac kost vaak meer. De verbindingstechniek alleen al, met Wi-Fi 6 en een echte GPS-module, is in deze prijsklasse zelden zo compleet. Toch moet je jezelf de vraag stellen of je wel een rugged Windows-apparaat nodig hebt. Voor hetzelfde geld koop je namelijk een gewone Surface Go of een iPad met toetsenbord, die tien keer sneller zijn en een veel mooier scherm hebben, maar dan wel kapot kunnen vallen. Ben je een Android-fan, dan schittert de Xiaomi Pad 7 Pro of de Samsung Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra met hoogwaardige OLED-schermen, maar ook die gaan stuk op de bouw en draaien geen gespecialiseerde Windows-apps. Met continu GPS-gebruik en een knipperend scherm mag je blij zijn met 4 tot 5 uur. De 5000 mAh is ondergemiddeld voor een tablet, dus voor een volledige werkdag is een reserve-accu geen overbodige luxe. Gelukkig kun je die snel verwisselen, want de batterij is los te koop.
Q: Is het scherm echt goed afleesbaar in direct zonlicht?
De 550 nits helderheid is oké, maar niet spectaculair. In de volle zon zul je nog steeds een handschaduw moeten maken. Binnen of op een bewolkte dag is het goed, maar verwacht geen HDR-kleurenpracht zoals op een high-end tablet.
Voor wie het niet geschikt is
Als je een tablet zoekt om Netflix op te kijken, spelletjes op te spelen, of om tijdens het reizen te schrijven en mailen, loop dan met een grote boog om de Vanquisher EX-8 heen. De trage N100 laat zelfs bij licht browsen en tikwerk de vertraging voelen, het scherm is matig en de batterij is binnen een paar uur leeg. Bovendien is Windows 11 IoT LTSC niet gebruiksvriendelijk voor consumenten, en die 1361 gram voelt als een baksteen in bed. Kijk liever naar een iPad of een Samsung Galaxy Tab, die voor hetzelfde geld een veel fijnere ervaring bieden. Ook voor studenten of grafisch creatieven is dit apparaat een frustrerende muur; je kunt er geen grafische software op draaien en het scherm is te klein en te blauwig voor nauwkeurig werk.
Oordeel
Voor een landmeter, monteur of geoloog die elke dag buiten op een tablet tikt, is de Vanquisher EX-8 een geduchte partner. De robuuste bouw, de uitstekende netwerkopties en het volwassen Windows IoT-besturingssysteem maken hem geschikt als mobiel data-invoerstation. De traagheid van de N100 is irritant, maar zolang je bij één of twee simpele apps blijft, went het. Het verwisselbare accu-systeem en de meegeleverde polsband en stylus onderstrepen dat dit ding écht voor het werk is gemaakt.
Voor iedereen die ook maar een beetje snelheid, een mooi scherm of een lange batterijduur zoekt, is de EX-8 een miskoop. Het is een tablet die je uit pure noodzaak koopt, niet uit verlangen. Ben je een student, kantoorwerker of creatieve ziel, ga dan voor een gewone Android-tablet of een iPad en accepteer dat je voorzichtig moet doen. De Vanquisher heeft zijn plek in de markt, maar die plek is klein en nat.
