Viltrox AF 28mm F4.5 Z Review

The Viltrox 28mm f/4.5 is the weirdest, most fun lens you can buy for $99. Forget everything you know about lens design, because this thing is basically a lens cap that takes pictures. It's a 28mm pancake that's so thin and light (just 80g) you'll forget it's on your camera. But here's the one thing to know: it's a one-trick pony. It's built for wide-angle snapshots and surprisingly good close-ups, but it's not your all-purpose lens.

What surprised me is how good the stabilization is for such a tiny lens. It's in the 90th percentile, which means you can handhold slow shutter speeds way easier than you'd expect. Don't compare this to a standard prime. If you want a 'real' all-around lens, look at the Nikon Z 35mm f/1.8 S or the Viltrox 35mm f/1.7. Those are faster, sharper, and more versatile. The Viltrox 28mm f/4.5 is in its own category. Compared to the Panasonic 14-140mm zoom, you lose all flexibility but gain a tiny form factor. This lens is for when you want your camera to disappear, not do everything.

Buy this lens if you already have a primary zoom or prime and want a fun, ultra-compact option for travel and creative close-ups. It's a toy, but a seriously well-executed one. Skip it if this will be your only lens, or if you need sharpness across the frame and good low-light performance.
