A 43-inch 4K Roku TV that's cheap as chips but delivers one of the worst pictures we've ever tested. Spend a couple more dollars and get a TCL 4-Series instead.

The JVC LT-43EP4457 is a budget 43-inch 4K TV that puts Roku above everything else. If you want the cheapest possible 4K screen with a friendly smart platform, it's on the list. But the one thing you need to know is that the picture quality is genuinely terrible. At 200 nits peak brightness, it's one of the dimmest TVs in our database, and HDR is a complete afterthought. For under $350, you're buying a Roku experience wrapped around a panel that struggles in anything but a pitch-black room.

What surprised us isn't that it's dim—it's just how dim. In our picture quality rankings, this thing scrapes the 1st percentile, literally at the bottom of the barrel. SDR content looks passable in a darkened bedroom, but any ambient light washes it out fast. The 4K resolution is there, but you'll rarely appreciate fine detail. On the plus side, the Roku interface is fluid and input lag around 9.5ms feels quick for casual games, so the TV never feels sluggish even if the screen is underwhelming.

At $250, this is one of the cheapest 43-inch 4K Roku TVs around. But you're giving up so much picture quality that it's hard to call it good value. For an extra $20–$40, a TCL 4-Series or Hisense A6 will get you noticeably more brightness and better contrast. Unless you're absolutely capped at this price and only watch in a dark room, skip it.

All the top competitors listed—like the TCL QM7K and Hisense U7—are in a different galaxy. Those are bright mini-LED sets that actually do HDR justice, and they're usually 65 inches and cost much more. A more relevant rival is the TCL 4-Series 43S435, which sticks with Roku but delivers a meaningfully brighter picture at a very similar price. If you just need the cheapest Roku TV, this JVC barely qualifies, but the TCL is the smarter spend.

If you're looking for a TV to watch sports during the day or want HDR movies to pop, this isn't it. Go get a TCL 4-Series 43S435 or Hisense 43A6H for a few bucks more.

The JVC LT-43EP4457 is a textbook case of getting exactly what you pay for. The Roku platform is excellent, and the TV is light and easy to set up. But the atrocious brightness and bottom-of-the-barrel picture quality make it nearly impossible to recommend when just a few extra dollars buys you a vastly better screen. Only buy this if you need the absolute lowest price and plan to watch exclusively in a dark room.
