Mitakon Zhongyi 55mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro Review

This lens is a one-trick pony, but that trick is absolutely wild. If you want to photograph the inside of a snowflake or the individual hairs on a fly's leg, this is your tool. Forget normal macro. This thing goes from 1:1 life-size all the way up to 5:1 magnification, which is insane. It's a specialist's lens, and it doesn't pretend to be anything else.

The optical performance is surprisingly solid for such a niche piece of gear, landing in the 76th percentile. It's sharp where it counts for macro work. The real surprise is how heavy and awkward it is to use at high magnifications. That 5.9-inch working distance at 5:1 means your lens is practically touching your subject, and you'll be casting shadows and scaring bugs away. It demands a tripod, patience, and a very specific kind of subject.

At $399, it's a steal for the magnification it offers. No other lens in this price range gets you to 5:1. Just know you're buying a single-purpose tool, not a general-use lens.

Don't compare this to normal primes like the Meike 55mm F1.8. That's a walk-around lens; this is a microscope. For true macro, the more relevant comparison is a dedicated 1:1 macro lens like Canon's own 100mm F2.8L. That lens gives you more working distance, autofocus, and image stabilization for general use, but it tops out at 1:1. This Mitakon is for when 1:1 isn't close enough. It's also in a different league than cheap wide-aperture lenses like the Viltrox 35mm f1.7, which are for portraits and low light, not bug portraits.

Buy this lens only if you already know exactly why you need 5:1 magnification. It's a fantastic, affordable tool for scientific photography, extreme detail work, or just blowing your own mind. For everyone else, even serious macro shooters, a standard 1:1 macro lens is far more practical. This is a niche masterpiece.
