Dell 14" Pro Max 14 Review

The Dell Pro Max 14 packs a mighty CPU into a small body, but its terrible gaming performance makes it a hard sell for most people.

Overview

The Dell Pro Max 14 is a laptop that's trying to do everything, and that's its biggest problem. It packs a crazy 50-core AMD CPU and a huge 32GB of RAM into a sleek 14-inch body, but then pairs it with an integrated GPU that can't keep up. The one thing you need to know is this: it's a developer's dream machine that completely falls apart if you even think about gaming.

Performance

The CPU performance is genuinely impressive, landing in the 80th percentile. That 50-core AMD chip chews through code compilation and multitasking like it's nothing. But the big surprise, and not a good one, is just how bad the gaming performance is. With a GPU in the 18th percentile, you're looking at a machine that struggles with anything more demanding than basic indie titles or old games, which is a real shame given the otherwise solid 120Hz screen.

Value & Pricing

At nearly $3000, the value proposition is tough. You're paying a premium for a top-tier CPU and RAM in a portable package, but you're getting last-gen graphics performance. If your work is purely CPU-bound, it might be worth it. For anyone else, it's a hard pass.

vs Competition

For a similar price, the Apple MacBook Pro 14" with an M4 Max runs circles around it in graphics performance and battery life, though you lose Windows and some raw multi-core CPU power. If you need Windows and gaming capability, the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i or MSI Vector 16 HX offer far better GPUs for the same money, but you'll trade portability for it. The ASUS Zenbook Duo is a more direct portable competitor, but its dual-screen focus is for a different user.

Verdict

I can only recommend the Dell Pro Max 14 to a very specific user: a developer or data scientist who needs extreme CPU power and RAM in a 14-inch laptop and doesn't care about graphics at all. For everyone else, especially gamers or creative pros, the crippled GPU and high price make it a bad buy. Look at an Apple MacBook Pro or a Windows gaming laptop instead.
