Viltrox Viltrox 13mm f/1.4 F1.4 Z-Mount Lens, Ultra Wide Review

The Viltrox 13mm f/1.4 is an ultra-wide prime for Nikon Z APS-C cameras. It gives you a 20mm full-frame equivalent view, which is super wide. That bright f/1.4 aperture means you can shoot in low light without cranking the ISO.

It's built for speed, with STM autofocus and built-in stabilization. Viltrox packed a lot of tech into a lens that's surprisingly compact at 422g. Just don't expect it to be weather sealed.

This lens is a specialist. Its autofocus lands in the 95th percentile, so it's quick and quiet, great for video. The f/1.4 aperture is in the 87th percentile, letting in tons of light. But the optical score is only in the 34th percentile. That means while it's sharp in the center, corners and distortion might be softer, especially wide open. The stabilization is solid, but the build quality is just okay.

At around $486, it's not cheap for a third-party APS-C lens. You're paying for that f/1.4 aperture and the stabilization. If you need that specific combo on a Z-mount crop sensor camera, it's your only real option. But if you can live with a slower lens, you could save a lot of money.

For Z-mount APS-C, you're comparing it to zooms like the Nikon Z DX 16-50mm, which is slower but way more versatile. The Viltrox 35mm f/1.7 is cheaper and a more classic focal length, but not as wide or bright. Against the Nikon Z 35mm f/1.8 S, that's a full-frame lens with much better optics, but it's more expensive and gives you a 52mm equivalent field of view on crop. This Viltrox wins on width and speed, but loses on flexibility and optical polish.

Buy this if you shoot on a Nikon Z50 or Zfc and absolutely need an ultra-wide, fast aperture prime for low-light interiors or astrophotography. It fills a very specific hole in the lineup. For everyone else, especially if you travel or shoot a bit of everything, a standard zoom is probably a smarter, more flexible choice.
