The Viltrox 135mm f/1.8 creates stunning portrait shots with beautiful bokeh, but its plasticky build and lack of weather sealing make it hard to fully recommend.

Overview

The Viltrox 135mm f/1.8 is a big, heavy, and specialized lens. It's built for one thing: making people look incredible. With that f/1.8 aperture and a focal length that flatters faces, it's a portrait photographer's tool, plain and simple. Just don't expect it to be anything else.

Performance

Optically, it's solid. Sharpness is good, and the bokeh is smooth and dreamy, which is the whole point. The autofocus is quiet and decently fast, landing in the 46th percentile, so it's not class-leading but gets the job done. The built-in stabilization is a nice bonus, sitting in the 86th percentile. But the build quality is its biggest letdown, ranking in the bottom 3rd percentile. It's not weather-sealed, and it just feels a bit cheap for a lens this size and price.

Value & Pricing

At $899, it's a tough call. You're getting a unique focal length with a bright aperture and stabilization, which is a rare combo. But you're also paying nearly a grand for a lens with bottom-tier build quality and no weather sealing. If dreamy portraits are your entire world, the optical performance might justify the cost. For anyone else, the compromises are hard to ignore.

vs Competition

Compared to Nikon's own Z 135mm f/1.8 S Plena, this Viltrox is less than half the price, but you give up legendary optics, flawless build, and weather sealing. Against more versatile lenses like a Nikon Z 85mm f/1.8 S, you gain reach and bokeh but lose portability and general usefulness. And next to Viltrox's own smaller primes, like their 35mm f/1.7, this 135mm is a one-trick pony that demands a much bigger commitment in your bag and your budget.

Verdict

Buy this lens if you are a dedicated portrait shooter who lives for that 135mm look and needs f/1.8, but can't touch the Nikon Plena's price tag. You'll need to baby it due to the build, and you'll only use it for one type of shot. For travel, events, or general use, there are far better and more versatile options.
