Sirui Sniper 23mm APS-C Autofocus Review

The Sirui Sniper 23mm f/1.2 is a weird and wonderful lens. It's a chunky, heavy piece of glass that feels cheap in the hand, but the image it produces is anything but. For under $300, you get a blazing fast f/1.2 aperture, surprisingly good autofocus, and image stabilization—a combo that's basically unheard of at this price. The one thing to know? This lens is a specialist, not a walk-around. It's built for one job: making your subject look incredible with creamy bokeh and a dreamy look, and it nails that job.

What surprised me most was the autofocus. For a third-party lens at this price, the STM motor is quiet, quick, and reliable, even with eye AF. It's in the 98th percentile for AF performance, which is nuts. The stabilization is also shockingly effective for handheld video work. The trade-off is the sheer size and weight; at 839g, it's a brick. It makes your camera front-heavy and awkward, a constant reminder you're using a budget lens with premium specs.

At $279, the value is absolutely insane if you want what it offers. You're getting 96th percentile aperture performance and 98th percentile autofocus for the cost of a basic kit zoom. Just know you're paying for the optics and features, not the build. It's worth it if you shoot portraits, low-light, or creative video and don't mind the heft.

The most direct competitor is the Viltrox 35mm f/1.7, which is smaller, lighter, and also has great AF, but you lose the f/1.2 light gathering and stabilization. The Fujifilm 23mm f/1.4 is the obvious upgrade path; it's sharper, better built, and weather-sealed, but it costs over twice as much and lacks stabilization. For a travel zoom, the Panasonic 14-140mm is the polar opposite: incredibly versatile but slow (f/5.6 at the long end). The Sirui isn't trying to be those lenses. It's a budget speed monster.

If you're a Fujifilm shooter who loves portraits, low-light, or cinematic video and you're on a tight budget, buy this lens. The image quality and feature set are unmatched for the money. Just be ready for its size and plasticky feel. If you need a do-everything walk-around lens or premium build quality, look elsewhere. This is a specialist tool, and it's a brilliant one.
