A real comparison would be against the older EF version (with an adapter) or the Sony 70-200mm GM II. The Sony is lighter, often sharper, and weather-sealed. The Canon wins on native RF integration and potentially better stabilization for video. But the Sony makes you think hard about switching systems.

Buy this if you're a Canon RF shooter who does professional video or portrait work and needs the optical perfection of a 70-200mm f/2.8. The lack of weather sealing is a genuine concern for outdoor pros. For everyone else, especially travelers or hobbyists, the weight, price, and specialized nature make it hard to recommend.
