This Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 is a weird one. It's built like a tiny tank and feels incredible in the hand, but it's a specialist's lens, not a do-it-all. The one thing you need to know? It's a premium, compact wide-angle prime for Sony's APS-C cameras that's fantastic for street photography, but you're paying a lot for the Zeiss badge and that specific focal length.

The build quality is the real surprise here. It's in the 92nd percentile, and you can feel it. The metal barrel and smooth focus ring are a cut above most other lenses in this price bracket. The optical performance is solid but not mind-blowing, landing around the 60th percentile. The autofocus is fine, but at the 47th percentile, it's not going to win any speed awards, especially compared to newer lenses.

Honestly, the value proposition is tough. Prices swing from $780 to $898. If you find it at the $780 end, it's a slightly easier pill to swallow, but you're still paying a Zeiss tax. For that money, you could get two or three excellent third-party lenses that cover more ground. Let's talk competitors. The Viltrox 35mm f/1.7 is a fraction of the price and gives you a more standard 50mm equivalent field of view, but the build is plastic and it lacks the Zeiss prestige. The Meike 55mm f/1.8 Pro is a better portrait option and has STM autofocus, which is smoother for video. If you want a wider angle, the Fujifilm Viltrox 25mm f/1.7 is a direct, much cheaper alternative for Fuji shooters. The Zeiss wins on pure feel and brand name, but loses on price, versatility, and modern features like stabilization.

Here's the deal. If you're a street photographer with a Sony APS-C camera who values a compact, beautifully built lens and has a soft spot for the Zeiss name, this lens will make you very happy. For everyone else, the high price and lack of stabilization make it a hard sell. Look at the Viltrox or Meike options first, and only come back to this Zeiss if you're still dreaming about that metal barrel.
