Sony SEL35F18 35mm f/1.8 Prime Review
The Sony 35mm f/1.8 is a fantastically compact and well-built lens with excellent stabilization, but its $500 price tag demands a close look at the competition.
Overview
This is the Sony 35mm f/1.8, a tiny prime lens for Sony's APS-C mirrorless cameras. It gives you a classic 'nifty fifty' field of view (52.5mm equivalent), which is perfect for everyday shooting, street photos, and casual portraits.
It's incredibly light at just 155 grams, so it's barely noticeable on your camera. The build quality is surprisingly solid for its size, landing in the 96th percentile. It's a lens you can just leave on your camera and forget about.
Performance
The f/1.8 aperture is good for low light and getting some background blur, though its bokeh quality is just okay. Where this lens really shines is stabilization, which is in the 89th percentile and a huge help for handheld video. The autofocus is quiet and internal, but it's not the fastest, ranking below average. And don't expect to do any close-up work with it, as macro performance is a clear weak spot.

Value & Pricing
Here's the big question. This lens costs around $500. For that price, you're paying a premium for the Sony name, the compact form factor, and that top-tier stabilization. You can get lenses that are sharper or faster for less money, but they often won't be this small or well-built.
Price History
vs Competition
Look at the Viltrox 35mm f/1.7. It's much cheaper and can be sharper, but it's bigger, lacks stabilization, and the build isn't as refined. The Meike 35mm f/1.8 is another full-frame option that's also cheaper, but again, no stabilization. If you're a Sony shooter who values a tiny, stabilized package for video and daily use, this lens makes sense. If you just want the best image quality for your dollar, the third-party options are tough to beat.
