Pentax Pentax HD Pentax DA 35mm f/2.8 Macro Limited Lens Review
The Pentax 35mm f/2.8 Macro packs true 1:1 magnification into a 213g metal barrel. It's a brilliant specialist, but a compromised everyday lens.
Overview
The Pentax HD DA 35mm f/2.8 Macro Limited is a weird, wonderful little lens. It's a 35mm prime that gives you a 53.5mm equivalent view on APS-C Pentax cameras, but its real party trick is that 1:1 macro capability. You get a true macro lens that weighs just 213 grams and fits in a pocket. That's the pitch. The reality is a lens that scores a solid 62/100 overall, with its 70.8/100 macro score being the clear standout. It's a specialist that happens to be a decent walk-around prime, not the other way around.
Performance
This lens lives and dies by its macro performance, and it's good. The 1:1 magnification ratio puts it in the 86th percentile for macro work, which means you can get seriously close. The trade-off is that 140mm minimum focus distance, so you're not getting right up on your subject. For everything else, it's competent. Optical quality sits in the 61st percentile, which is fine for the price, and the f/2.8 aperture lands right in the middle of the pack at 53rd percentile. Don't expect creamy bokeh (58th percentile) or fast autofocus (49th percentile). It's sharp where it needs to be for macro, and that's the point.

Value & Pricing
At around $447, this lens asks you to pay a premium for its unique combination of size and macro ability. You're not buying it for its optical brilliance or speed. You're buying it because it's the only lens that does this specific thing this well at this size for the Pentax K mount. If you need a true 1:1 macro and value portability above all else, the price makes sense. If you want a fast, general-purpose 35mm prime, there are better values out there.
Price History
vs Competition
Compared to something like the Viltrox 35mm f/1.7 for Z-mount, you're trading two full stops of light (f/1.7 vs f/2.8) and likely better autofocus for that 1:1 macro capability. The Viltrox is a better low-light and portrait lens. Against a dedicated macro like the Meike 55mm f/1.8, you lose that fast aperture again, but you gain a more normal field of view and a much lighter package. The Panasonic 14-140mm zoom offers macro too (though not 1:1) and insane versatility, but it's bigger and optically weaker. This Pentax lens exists in its own niche.

Verdict
This is a recommendation with a big asterisk. If you shoot with Pentax and have ever thought, 'I wish I had a macro lens but they're all so big,' this is your lens. Its 86th percentile macro performance in a 213g body is genuinely special. But if you're looking for a fast, versatile, do-everything prime, look elsewhere. The mediocre autofocus, lack of stabilization, and slow aperture hold it back for general use. It's a fantastic tool for a specific job.
