Viltrox VILTROX 16mm F1.8 FE Lens for Sony E Mount, Large Review
The Viltrox 16mm f/1.8 is a fast ultra-wide lens with a clever LCD screen, but its massive size and average optics hold it back from being a must-buy.
Overview
The Viltrox 16mm f/1.8 FE is a big, bright, and surprisingly capable ultra-wide prime for Sony shooters. It's got a massive f/1.8 aperture and a built-in LCD screen, which is a cool trick you don't see every day. But at over 2.4 pounds, this lens is a serious chunk of glass, and it's definitely not built for a quick hike.
Performance
The autofocus is a real standout, landing in the 96th percentile. It's quick, quiet with its STM motor, and locks onto subjects reliably. The image stabilization is solid too, at the 89th percentile, which helps a lot at this wide focal length. The trade-off is in the optics, which only score in the 34th percentile. Expect some softness in the corners, especially wide open.

Value & Pricing
At $580, it's a tough sell. You're paying a premium for that f/1.8 aperture and the unique LCD screen. If you absolutely need a super fast ultra-wide and the screen appeals to you, it has its niche. But for most people, that money could go towards a sharper, lighter, or more versatile lens.
vs Competition
It's in a weird spot. Compared to something like the Sony 20mm f/1.8 G, the Viltrox is heavier, less sharp, and not weather-sealed, but it's wider and has that screen. Against the smaller, cheaper Samyang/Rokinon 18mm f/2.8, the Viltrox is much brighter and has stabilization, but it's also three times the size and weight. You're really choosing between maximum aperture and portability here.

Verdict
Buy this if you're a dedicated astrophotographer or real estate shooter who lives at 16mm and must have an f/1.8 aperture, and you don't mind the heft. For everyone else, especially travelers or hybrid shooters, its size and optical compromises make it hard to recommend over the competition.
