Viltrox 56mm F1.7 f/1.7 AF Review

The Viltrox 56mm f/1.7 is a weirdly specific lens that absolutely nails its one job. Forget about versatility—this thing is a portrait and macro specialist, and it's shockingly good at both. If you're looking for a lightweight, affordable way to get stunning close-ups and creamy headshots on your Sony camera, this is it. Just know you won't be using it for much else.

What surprised me is how well it handles two completely different tasks. Its autofocus is in the 96th percentile, so it's fast and reliable for portraits, locking onto eyes without a fuss. But then you can flip it to macro mode and get incredibly sharp close-ups, landing in the 89th percentile for that category. The stabilization is also top-tier, which is a huge bonus for handheld video or slower shutter speeds. It feels like two great lenses in one oddly-shaped package.

At around $180, this lens is a steal. You're getting pro-level autofocus performance and solid stabilization in a package that also does great macro work. For a portrait shooter who dabbles in close-ups, it's a no-brainer. Just don't expect it to be your walk-around lens.

Compared to the Meike 55mm f/1.8, the Viltrox wins on autofocus speed and adds stabilization, but the Meike might feel a bit sturdier. If you need a more general-purpose prime, look at the Viltrox 35mm f/1.7 or the Yongnuo 35mm f/1.8. They're wider and better for everyday shooting, but they won't touch this 56mm's portrait compression or macro chops. This lens exists in its own niche.

Buy this lens if you shoot a lot of portraits or macro on a Sony APS-C camera and want fantastic performance without spending a fortune. It's a specialist tool that excels in its narrow lane. If you need one lens to do everything, look elsewhere. But for what it does, it's incredibly hard to beat.
