HP EliteBook 13.3" Silver Review

It's a RAM-loaded relic. You're buying 2020's slow business tech in 2024 for the sake of 32GB of memory—only do it if that's your absolute top priority.

This refurbished HP EliteBook 830 G7 is a weirdly specific machine. It's packing a massive 32GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD, but it's built around a four-year-old, low-power Intel processor. The one thing to know? This is a business laptop from 2020 that someone has loaded with memory, and it's being sold as a general-purpose machine. It's not a gaming rig, it's not a creative powerhouse, and that screen is nothing special. It's a workhorse for very specific tasks, and you need to know which ones.

The performance story is a tale of two specs. That 32GB of RAM is fantastic for having 50 browser tabs open while running a dozen spreadsheets—it's in the 72nd percentile for memory. But the aging Intel Core i7-10610U CPU drags it down, landing in the bottom 40% of our database. The integrated Intel UHD 620 graphics are predictably weak, scoring a dismal 6.8/100 for gaming. It'll boot fast from the SSD, but don't expect it to blaze through modern applications.

At around $674, the value is questionable. You're paying for RAM and storage on an outdated platform. For the same money, you could get a brand-new laptop with a much faster modern CPU, but probably only 16GB of RAM. If your work absolutely demands 32GB right now on a tight budget, it's an option. Otherwise, it's hard to recommend.

Don't even look at gaming laptops like the Lenovo Legion or creative machines like the MSI Creator—this isn't that. The real competition is other refurbished business laptops or new budget models. Compared to a new ASUS Zenbook, you'll get a far better screen and a faster, more efficient CPU, but half the RAM. Versus an Apple MacBook, you're in a completely different universe of performance, battery life, and build quality, but also price. This HP wins only on raw RAM and storage capacity for the dollar.

If you're a student, a casual user, or anyone who cares about screen quality, battery life, or general snappiness, this isn't it. Go get a new laptop with a modern Ryzen 5 or Core i5 processor, 16GB of RAM, and a nicer screen instead. You'll be much happier.

We can't recommend this for most people. It's too much of a spec mismatch. The fantastic RAM and storage are shackled to a slow, old processor and a poor-quality screen. The only person who should buy this is someone who needs 32GB of RAM for virtual machines or massive data sets immediately, has a strict sub-$700 budget, and doesn't care about CPU speed, screen quality, or having a warranty they can trust. That's a very narrow audience.
