Nikon Nikon Zf Mirrorless Camera (Silver & Cognac Brown) Review

The Nikon Z f is a beautiful, retro-styled full-frame camera with great stabilization, but its autofocus and video specs hold it back from being a true all-rounder.

Overview

The Nikon Z f is a camera that wants to be two things at once. It's a full-frame mirrorless body dressed up in retro, film-camera style, complete with silver finish and a cognac brown leatherette grip. And it's packed with modern tech like in-body stabilization and a solid burst shooting speed.

But that split personality comes with some real trade-offs. The looks are fantastic if you're into the vintage vibe, but the build isn't weather-sealed, and the specs tell a story of a camera that's good at some things and just okay at others.

Performance

Performance is a mixed bag. The 14fps mechanical burst is snappy, and the IBIS is excellent, landing in the 91st percentile. That's great for handheld shooting. But the autofocus and sensor performance are both in the bottom half of the pack, which explains its low scores for sports and wildlife. The battery life is also just average, so you'll want a spare.

Value & Pricing

At just under $2000 for the body, the value proposition is all about the style. You're paying a premium for that classic look. For pure performance at this price, there are cameras that will run circles around it. But if the aesthetic is a major part of the appeal for you, then the price might feel justified.

vs Competition

Compared to its own little brother, the APS-C Nikon Z fc, you're getting a much better sensor and IBIS for a lot more money. Against workhorses like the Canon EOS R6 Mark II, the Z f falls way behind in autofocus and video features. And if you love retro style but want better video, the Fujifilm X-T30 III is a much cheaper, though crop-sensor, alternative. The Z f sits in a niche of its own.

Verdict

Buy this camera if you're a hobbyist or enthusiast who values style as much as substance, and you shoot in a way that plays to its strengths—like street photography or travel where the IBIS and looks are a big plus. Don't buy it if you need top-tier autofocus for action, serious video capabilities, or a weather-sealed body for rough conditions.
