Fujifilm GFX100RF Medium Format Black Review

The GFX100RF is Fujifilm's play to make medium format more approachable. It's a rangefinder-style body that's surprisingly portable for a camera with a sensor this big. It ditches the in-body stabilization and weather sealing of its siblings to get there, which is a major trade-off. But you get that classic Fuji handling, including the new Aspect Ratio dial and 20 Film Simulation modes for that signature look straight out of camera.

Performance is a mixed bag. The 102MP sensor is the star, delivering incredible detail when you nail the shot. But the autofocus lands in the 46th percentile, so it's not the fastest or most reliable for moving subjects. Burst shooting and video specs are also mid-pack. It's built for deliberate, slower-paced photography, not action. The fixed screen and lack of stabilization don't help for video either.

At $5600, the value proposition is narrow. You're paying a huge premium for that medium format sensor and the unique handling. But you're giving up core features like stabilization and weather sealing that come standard on cameras costing half as much. It's not a good all-rounder. You're buying it for the sensor and the experience, period.

Stack it up against its peers and the trade-offs are clear. The Sony A7R IV gives you 61MP in a much faster, stabilized, and sealed full-frame body for way less money. The Fujifilm X-S20 is a fraction of the price and wipes the floor with it for video and autofocus. Even the Canon EOS R6 Mark II, with 'only' 24MP, is a far more capable and versatile tool. The GFX100RF only wins if ultimate resolution and that Fuji look are your only goals.

Buy this if you're a dedicated landscape, studio, or portrait shooter who values ultimate image quality above all else and doesn't need to shoot in bad weather or chase action. For everyone else, especially travel or hybrid shooters, a high-resolution full-frame camera is a smarter, more versatile buy.
