Acer Nitro 15.6" V Gaming Laptop | Review

The Acer Nitro V packs an RTX 3050 into a $650 package, but its paltry 8GB of RAM is a major bottleneck. It's a gamer's project, not a ready-to-run system.

Overview

The Acer Nitro V is a $650 gaming laptop that makes some clear trade-offs to hit that price. Its RTX 3050 GPU lands in the 68th percentile, which means it's got enough power for solid 1080p gaming on medium to high settings. But the rest of the package is where the budget shows: you're looking at a CPU in the 43rd percentile and a meager 8GB of RAM that sits in the bottom 16th percentile. It's a machine built around that one decent component.

You get a 15.6-inch 144Hz IPS screen, which is a nice feature at this price, and a 512GB SSD. The chassis is a bit chunky at 2.11kg, but it's not out of line for a budget gaming rig. The big question is whether that RTX 3050 is enough to carry the weight of the other, weaker specs.

Performance

Performance is all about the GPU here. That RTX 3050 6GB is the star, punching above its weight class to hit the 68th percentile. In real terms, that means you can expect to play most modern games at 1080p with decent frame rates, especially if you're willing to tweak some settings. The 144Hz screen means you'll actually see the benefit in smoother competitive titles.

Everything else is a step behind. The Intel Core i5-13420H is a fine chip, but its 43rd percentile ranking shows it's squarely in the mid-pack. The real bottleneck is that 8GB of RAM. For a modern gaming or multitasking system, that's just not enough. You'll want to upgrade that to 16GB as soon as you can, which is thankfully possible since it has two DDR5 slots.

Value & Pricing

At $650, the value proposition is simple: you're paying for the RTX 3050 and the 144Hz screen. Everything else is a compromise to hit that price. Compared to other laptops in this range, that GPU gives it a real edge for gaming. But you have to be ready to spend another $50 or so on a RAM upgrade immediately, which bumps the real cost closer to $700. If you can find a competitor with 16GB of RAM at a similar price, it might be a better deal, even with a slightly weaker GPU.

vs Competition

Compared to something like a Lenovo Legion with an RTX 4050, you're giving up a lot of GPU power, but you're also saving several hundred dollars. Against more direct budget rivals, the Nitro V's 144Hz screen and Thunderbolt 4 port are unique advantages. But that 8GB of RAM is a huge weakness. Many competitors at this price, like certain MSI or ASUS models, might offer a slightly slower GPU but pair it with 16GB of RAM, which is a much more balanced system out of the box. For pure gaming frames, the Nitro V's GPU holds up, but for anything else, that RAM will hold you back.

Verdict

This is a solid pick if your only goal is budget 1080p gaming and you're willing to upgrade the RAM yourself on day one. The RTX 3050 and 144Hz screen deliver where it counts for gamers. But if you need a laptop for school, work, or multitasking right out of the box, that 8GB of RAM is a dealbreaker. Look for a model that includes 16GB, even if it means a small step down in GPU power. For the right buyer who knows the drill, it's a good deal.
