Apple MacBook Air Apple 13" MacBook Air (M4, Starlight) Review

The MacBook Air M4 is incredibly portable and reliable, but its graphics performance and $1599 price tag give us pause.

Overview

The 13-inch MacBook Air with the M4 chip is a 1.24kg ultraportable that nails the basics. It scores in the 91st percentile for compactness, which means it's one of the easiest laptops to carry around, and it's incredibly reliable, landing in the 96th percentile. You're looking at 24GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD, which puts it in a solid spot for storage and memory compared to other laptops. This isn't a gaming machine, but for the tasks it's built for, it's a smooth operator. The 13.6-inch display is sharp and bright at 500 nits, making it great for work anywhere.

Performance

Performance is all about the M4 chip. Its CPU lands in the 66th percentile, which is solid for an ultraportable. That means it handles everyday tasks, web browsing, and even some light photo editing without breaking a sweat. The 24GB of RAM helps a lot with multitasking, sitting at the 60th percentile. Now, the GPU is a different story. It's in the 18th percentile, which confirms this isn't for gaming or heavy 3D work. But for the target audience, that's fine. The real story is efficiency. The 53Wh battery paired with this chip delivers excellent battery life, which is a huge part of the Air's appeal.

Value & Pricing

At $1599, the value proposition is tricky. You're paying a premium for the Apple ecosystem, the ultraportable design, and that legendary reliability. The core specs—CPU, RAM, storage—are good but not class-leading for the price. You're really buying the complete package: macOS, the build quality, and the battery life. If those are your top priorities, the price makes sense. If raw specs per dollar matter more, there are better values out there.

vs Competition

Compared to the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M4 Max, the Air gives up a lot of performance and ports for a much lighter and thinner body. The Pro is a powerhouse; the Air is a featherweight. Against a Windows ultraportable like the ASUS Zenbook Duo, you lose the innovative dual-screen setup and likely get a weaker CPU, but you gain macOS and likely better battery life. Compared to gaming laptops like the MSI Vector 16, there's no contest in GPU performance—the Air isn't even in the same league. The Air's strength is its focus: it's the best pure ultraportable in the Apple lineup.

Verdict

The MacBook Air M4 is a fantastic laptop if your priorities are portability, reliability, and a great everyday experience. The CPU and RAM are sufficient for most tasks, and the battery life is excellent. But, the GPU is weak and the price is high for the raw performance. I'd recommend it for students, business travelers, and anyone who values a no-fuss, ultra-light laptop above all else. If you need more graphics power or a bigger screen, look at the MacBook Pro or a Windows alternative.
