Fujifilm Fujinon GF 110mm F2 R LM Review

The Fujifilm GF 110mm F2 creates beautiful portraits, but its $3200 price and limited versatility make it a tough sell for anyone but the most dedicated pros.

Overview

This Fujifilm GF 110mm F2 is a portrait photographer's dream lens, but it's also a one-trick pony. The one thing you need to know is that if you're shooting portraits on a GFX medium format camera, this lens delivers stunning, creamy bokeh and beautiful subject separation. If you need anything else, like versatility or close-up capability, you're going to be disappointed. It's a specialist tool, and a very expensive one at that.

Performance

The performance is exactly what you'd expect from a fast prime on a big sensor: sharp where it counts and gloriously soft in the background. What surprised me was how middle-of-the-road the autofocus is, landing in the 49th percentile. For a $3200 lens, I expected it to be snappier and more confident, especially for video work where it scores decently. It gets the job done, but don't expect sports-level speed.

Value & Pricing

At $3200, the value proposition is tough. You're paying a massive premium for that medium format f/2 look. If you're a working portrait pro who bills enough to justify it, maybe. For everyone else, it's a hard sell when there are so many fantastic and more versatile lenses for a fraction of the price.

vs Competition

Look at the Viltrox 35mm f1.7 for Fuji X Mount. It's a completely different focal length, but it highlights the trade-off. For under $300, you get great bokeh and solid AF in a tiny package. You lose the medium format magic and ultimate background separation, but you gain portability and save nearly three grand. For GFX shooters wanting more flexibility, a zoom like the Fujifilm GF 32-64mm, while slower, is a far more practical single-lens solution.

Verdict

This is a luxury item for a very specific photographer. If you live and breathe portraits on your GFX and money is no object, you'll love the results. For any other scenario—travel, events, video, or if you're on a budget—there are better, smarter choices. I can only recommend it to that niche pro who needs this exact look.
