Nikon Z Zf Black Review
The Nikon Z f is a camera you buy for its gorgeous design, not its specs. We found its performance surprisingly average for the price.
Overview
The Nikon Z f is a camera that wants to be two things at once, and it's only great at one of them. It's a beautiful, retro-styled body that feels amazing in your hands, but it's wrapped around a camera that's surprisingly average at taking pictures. The one thing to know? This is a camera you buy for how it looks and feels, not for how it performs on paper. If you're chasing specs, you'll be disappointed. If you're chasing a vibe, you might just fall in love.
Performance
The numbers tell a clear story here. For a camera at this price, its core photo specs are just okay. The sensor lands in the 34th percentile, and the autofocus is in the 45th. That means it's fine, but it's not going to blow you away. What did surprise me was the stabilization, which is genuinely excellent at the 89th percentile. It makes shooting handheld in low light way easier than you'd expect from a camera with this sensor. The burst shooting at 14fps is also solid, but the middling AF holds it back for serious action.

Value & Pricing
At nearly $1900, it's a tough sell. You're paying a premium for the design and the Nikon full-frame badge. The actual performance you get for that money is middle-of-the-pack. It's not worth it if specs are your main concern.
vs Competition
Look at the Canon EOS R6 Mark II. For similar money, you get a sensor and autofocus system that are in a completely different league for sports and action. If you love the retro style but want better value, the Nikon Z fc is its smaller, APS-C sibling and costs way less. And if video is a priority, the Sony Alpha 6700 runs circles around the Z f, despite having a smaller sensor. The Z f loses on pure specs to all of them.

Verdict
This is a niche camera with a clear audience. If you're a photographer who values the experience of shooting—the dials, the feel, the look—over having the absolute latest tech, the Z f is a compelling and fun tool. For everyone else, especially hybrid shooters or spec chasers, there are better, more modern options for your money. Buy it with your heart, not your head.
