OM System OLYMPUS PEN E-PL3 14-42mm 12.3 MP Mirrorless Review

The Olympus PEN E-PL3 is a study in contradictions. On paper, it's a mirrorless camera with a 12.3MP CMOS sensor and a 14-42mm kit lens, specs that feel firmly planted in the past. But then you see it has in-body image stabilization (IBIS) that lands in the 90th percentile, which is genuinely impressive for a camera in this class. It's a camera that wants to be a jack-of-all-trades, with features like a tilting screen, a dedicated movie button, and even 3D photo modes, but its core performance metrics tell a different story.

Performance is a mixed bag, and the numbers don't lie. The 5fps mechanical burst speed puts it in the 38th percentile, which is fine for casual shooting but won't cut it for serious action. Autofocus sits at the 44th percentile, so it's decent but not snappy. The real star is the stabilization. That 90th percentile IBIS means you can handhold shots at much slower shutter speeds than you'd think possible, which is a huge asset for stills and video. Just don't expect miracles from the sensor, which is in the 29th percentile. Video capability is also a weak point at the 31st percentile, despite the 1080p60 recording.

At a current price of $699, the value proposition is tough. You're paying a premium for that excellent IBIS system, but you're getting a sensor and video package that was outdated years ago. For the same money, you can find modern cameras with much better sensors, autofocus, and 4K video. This price feels like it's banking on the Olympus brand and the stabilization tech alone, which isn't enough given the other compromises.

Look at the competition. A Sony a6400, often found around this price, smokes the E-PL3 in autofocus, sensor quality, and video, though it lacks IBIS. The Fujifilm X-S20 is a bit more but offers vastly better video, a newer sensor, and great autofocus in a similar form factor. Even older models like the Canon EOS R6 (used) offer full-frame sensors and professional features for not much more. The E-PL3's stabilization is its only real advantage, and that's a hard trade to make when everything else is so far behind.

The Olympus PEN E-PL3 is a hard sell in 2024. That 90th percentile IBIS is genuinely great, but it's wrapped in a package with a dated sensor, mediocre video, and slow burst shooting. Unless you find it for a deep, deep discount and your only priority is handheld stills stabilization, you should look elsewhere. There are too many better-rounded cameras at this price point that won't leave you feeling like you bought a relic.
