Sony G Master FE 135mm 1.8 Review

Let's cut to the chase: this Sony 135mm G Master lens is a tough sell. The numbers don't lie, and they paint a picture of a premium-priced prime lens that's surprisingly average across the board. The one thing you need to know is that for a specialized portrait lens, its bokeh and optical quality rankings are shockingly low, landing in the bottom third of all lenses. You're paying for the red GM badge, but you're not getting the performance that usually comes with it.

What surprised me was just how middling the autofocus is. For a modern G Master lens, landing in the 48th percentile for AF is frankly disappointing. It's not bad, but it's not the lightning-fast, reliable system you'd expect at this price. The lack of stabilization is also a notable omission, especially on a longer focal length where camera shake is more noticeable.

Worth it? Not even close. The price swings from $1718 to $2248, and even at the low end, it's a bad deal. You're spending serious money for performance that gets smoked by cheaper alternatives. If you find it for $1718, that's the 'best' deal, but it's still not a good one.

Look at the competitors. The Viltrox 35mm f/1.7 and Meike 55mm f/1.8 Pro are both fraction of the price and, based on their rankings targeting similar uses, likely offer more compelling performance for portraits. Even Sony's own 15mm f/1.4 G Lens probably delivers more 'wow' for your dollar. This 135mm GM is in a no-man's land: too expensive to be a value pick and not good enough to be a performance king.

I can't recommend buying this lens. It's a niche product that fails to excel in its niche. For portrait photographers, there are better, sharper, and more affordable options out there. For everyone else, its lack of versatility makes it a one-trick pony that doesn't even do the trick very well. Save your money and look elsewhere.
