Sony Alpha a7S Mirrorless Review

The Sony a7's full-frame sensor still delivers great photos, but its slow autofocus and lack of modern features make it hard to recommend for most shooters today.

Overview

The Sony a7 is the camera that kicked off the full-frame mirrorless revolution, and you can feel its age. It's a classic, but it's a classic with some very modern frustrations. The one thing to know? This is a pure photography tool for a very specific shooter. It's got that killer full-frame sensor, but almost everything wrapped around it feels dated and slow.

Performance

That 95th percentile sensor score is no joke. The image quality you can pull from this 24.3MP full-frame sensor is still fantastic, especially for the price. What surprised me, in a bad way, is how much the rest of the experience drags that down. The autofocus lands in the 44th percentile, and you feel it. It hunts in low light, and the burst shooting is sluggish. It's a reminder that a great sensor is only part of the story.

Value & Pricing

At $788, it's a complicated value. You're paying for that full-frame sensor and not much else. If your budget is locked and you only care about still image quality from a tripod, it's a path into full-frame. But for almost anyone else, that money goes further on a newer APS-C camera that will actually be enjoyable to use.

vs Competition

Don't even look at the high-end competitors like the a7R IV or EOS R6. The real fight is against modern APS-C cameras like the Fujifilm X-S20 or Sony's own a6400. For similar money, those cameras give you vastly better autofocus, video features, stabilization, and a more polished overall experience. The only thing they don't give you is that full-frame sensor. The Pentax K-3 Mark III is the other alternative for a pure photography DSLR, but it's a different, heavier system.

Verdict

I can only recommend the original Sony a7 to a very niche buyer: a budget-conscious photographer who shoots mostly static subjects on a tripod and values full-frame image quality above every other feature. For product or landscape photography where speed doesn't matter, it works. For everyone else—especially if you want to shoot video, shoot moving subjects, or just enjoy using your camera—spend your $788 on something newer. The tech world has left this pioneer behind.
