Canon L IS USM Review

This lens is a solid workhorse, but it's hard to justify the price tag. The one thing you need to know is that you're paying a premium for the Canon RF badge and a constant f/2.8 aperture. It's a good lens, but it's not a great one, especially when you look at the competition. For a standard zoom, it gets the job done across a useful 24-70mm range, and the image stabilization is genuinely helpful. But for nearly $2600, you should expect more than just 'good enough'.

The performance is a mixed bag, and the optical quality percentile ranking in the 35th percentile is the biggest surprise, and not in a good way. For a lens at this price, you'd expect tack-sharp images across the frame, but it seems like you're paying more for the mount and the f/2.8 spec than for truly exceptional glass. The autofocus, sitting in the 45th percentile, is fine but not lightning fast, which might be a letdown for fast-paced shooting.

It's not worth it. At $2599, this lens is dramatically overpriced for what it delivers. You're buying the brand and the convenience of a native RF mount lens, but you're not getting optical performance or build quality that matches the cost.

The Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II is the elephant in the room. It's sharper, better built, and often cheaper, making the Canon look like a poor value. If you're locked into the RF system and want a similar zoom, you might be better off looking at the RF 24-105mm f/4L for more versatility or waiting for a potential Mark II of this lens. The Viltrox and Meike primes mentioned are in a different category, but they highlight how much more optical quality you can get for your money elsewhere.

Skip it. Unless you absolutely need a native RF f/2.8 standard zoom right now and money is no object, this lens is hard to recommend. For most Canon shooters, adapting a used EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II or opting for a third-party RF option (when they arrive) will give you better performance for less cash. Wait for a refresh.
