Fujifilm X-Pro X-Pro 1 16MP Review
The Fujifilm X-Pro 1 offers a unique shooting experience and great image quality, but its slow autofocus makes it a tough sell at $999.
Overview
The Fujifilm X-Pro 1 is a camera that makes a statement. It's built around that unique 16.3MP APS-C 'X-Trans' sensor, which lands in the 75th percentile for image quality. That means you're getting files with a distinct look and solid detail right out of the gate. And with a burst rate of 6 frames per second, it's surprisingly capable for a camera that feels more deliberate than speedy. Just don't expect it to track a sprinter. It's a tool for photographers who want a specific, tactile experience, not a jack-of-all-trades.
Performance
Performance here is a mixed bag, but the highs are very high. That sensor is the star, delivering image quality that punches well above its class. The 6fps burst speed is also strong, sitting in the 75th percentile. That's fast enough for street photography or casual action. The autofocus, however, is the main bottleneck. It's a 49-area contrast-detection system that ranks in the 44th percentile. It's fine for static or slow-moving subjects, but it hunts in low light and struggles with anything unpredictable. Video performance is a clear afterthought, ranking in the bottom third of cameras.

Value & Pricing
At $999, the X-Pro 1 is a tough sell on pure specs. You're paying a premium for its rangefinder-style design and that unique sensor character. For the same money, a Fujifilm X-S20 or Sony a6400 offers vastly better autofocus, video, and overall speed. The value here is entirely emotional and aesthetic. If you crave the tactile controls and optical viewfinder experience, it might be worth it. If you just want the best image quality for your dollar, look elsewhere.
vs Competition
Stacked against modern rivals, the X-Pro 1's age shows. The Fujifilm X-S20, for similar money, smokes it in autofocus, has stabilization, and shoots 6K video. The Sony a6400 has legendary autofocus tracking and a more versatile sensor. Even the Canon EOS R6 Mark II, though more expensive, is in a different universe for speed and video. The X-Pro 1's only real competitors are cameras like the Pentax K-3 Mark III, which also offers a unique, dedicated shooting experience for enthusiasts. But for most people, the trade-offs in speed and features are too significant.

Verdict
The Fujifilm X-Pro 1 is a specialist's camera, not a generalist's tool. Its 75th-percentile sensor delivers beautiful images, and the shooting experience is genuinely special. But its 44th-percentile autofocus and lack of modern video features are real limitations. I can only recommend it to a photographer who values the rangefinder form factor and film simulations above all else, and who doesn't need to shoot fast action or serious video. For everyone else, a more modern mirrorless camera will be a better, faster, and more capable partner.
