Thypoch Simera 50mm f/1.4 Review
The Thypoch Simera 50mm f/1.4 creates some of the creamiest bokeh you can buy, but its manual-focus-only design makes it a specialist's tool, not an everyday lens.
Overview
This lens is a one-trick pony, but man, what a trick. The Nikon Thypoch Simera 50mm f/1.4 is built for one thing: creating dreamy, creamy bokeh that lands in the 98th percentile. If you're a portrait shooter who loves that classic, soft background look and doesn't mind focusing by hand, this is your lens. Just don't expect it to be your walk-around, do-everything glass. It's a specialist, and it knows it.
Performance
The bokeh performance genuinely surprised me. With 14 aperture blades, the out-of-focus areas are buttery smooth and really flattering for portraits. What didn't surprise me was the optical score in the 33rd percentile. You're paying for that beautiful bokeh character, not for clinical sharpness corner-to-corner. It's got a specific look, and you'll either love it or find it too soft for general use.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Bokeh quality is absolutely top-tier and gorgeous for portraits. 98th
- Compact and light for an f/1.4 lens at just 309 grams. 88th
- Build quality feels solid and lands in a respectable 85th percentile. 85th
- That f/1.4 aperture gives you great light gathering and subject separation.
Cons
- It's manual focus only, which is a deal-breaker for many shooters. 14th
- Overall optical performance is middling (33rd percentile), so don't expect pin-sharp edges.
- No weather sealing means you're staying indoors on dusty or rainy days.
- Minimum focus distance of 17.7 inches isn't great for close-up work.

Value & Pricing
At $549, the value is entirely dependent on your needs. If you're a portrait artist who lives for bokeh and manual focus is part of your workflow, it's a unique and worthwhile tool. For anyone else, especially those who need autofocus or a sharper all-around lens, it's a hard sell. You're paying a premium for a very specific character.
Price History
vs Competition
This lens sits in a weird spot. It's more expensive than the fully-automatic Meike 55mm F1.8 Pro, which gives you sharp AF and is more versatile. Compared to something like the Viltrox 35mm f/1.7, you're getting a different focal length and that legendary Simera bokeh, but you're giving up autofocus entirely. The Thypoch is for the shooter who prioritizes rendering over convenience and is willing to pay for it.

Verdict
I can only recommend the Thypoch Simera 50mm f/1.4 to a very specific photographer: the dedicated portrait shooter who works deliberately, loves manual focus, and values beautiful bokeh above all else. For everyone else—travel shooters, hybrid video creators, or anyone who needs a reliable daily driver—there are better, more versatile options out there. This is a niche lens for a niche audience.
