Sony FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS II Review

Sony's 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 II is all about portability. It's tiny and light, but the slow aperture holds it back in low light.

Overview

This is the kit lens that comes with a lot of Sony full-frame cameras, and honestly, it's better than you'd expect. It's tiny, weighing just 295g, and it stays compact when you zoom. It covers a useful 28-70mm range, which is great for everyday shooting.

It's not trying to be a pro lens, and that's the point. It's built for portability and convenience. The optical design includes one ED and three aspherical elements to keep things sharp, and the seven-blade aperture helps with bokeh.

Performance

The build quality is surprisingly solid, landing in the 87th percentile. Optics are decent too, sitting in the 66th percentile, so images are generally sharp and clean. But the autofocus is just average (45th percentile), and the variable f/3.5-5.6 aperture is a real limitation (39th percentile). You'll struggle in low light, and you won't get much background blur. It's also not great for close-up work, scoring in the 16th percentile for macro.

Value & Pricing

At $448, it's a tricky sell on its own. If you're buying it bundled with a camera, it's a fantastic value and a great way to start. As a standalone purchase, you're paying a premium for the Sony badge and the compact size. There are sharper and faster primes you can get for this money.

vs Competition

Stack it up against the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II, and it's no contest—the GM is better in every way, but it's also huge and costs over four times as much. For a similar price, the Viltrox 35mm f/1.7 gives you a much brighter aperture for low light and better bokeh, but you lose the zoom. The Meike 55mm f/1.8 is another prime alternative with better low-light performance. This lens wins on size and convenience, but loses on pure optical specs.

Verdict

Buy this if you're getting it with a camera kit and want the smallest, lightest walk-around lens possible. Don't buy it as a standalone lens if you care about low-light performance or background separation. It's a great companion for travel and street photography where size is everything.
