Acer Spin Plus 514 -14" Platinum Silver 2025 Review
The Acer Chromebook Spin 514 packs a surprising GPU and tons of ports, but its Chrome OS limitations and questionable reliability make it a tough sell at $699.
Overview
The Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 514 is a weird one. It's got ports for days and a surprisingly capable GPU, but it's still a Chromebook at its core. The one thing you need to know is this: it's a fantastic portable machine for specific tasks, but it's absolutely not a laptop replacement for most people. If you live in a browser and need to plug in a lot of stuff, it's worth a look. If you need to install actual software, look elsewhere.
Performance
The performance story is all over the place. That MediaTek Kompanio CPU is fine for Chrome OS tasks, landing in the 70th percentile, but the real shocker is the GPU. It's in the 98th percentile, which is wild for a Chromebook. Don't get too excited though—this isn't a gaming machine. The 10.1/100 gaming score proves that. The GPU power is great for smooth video playback and maybe some light photo editing in web apps, but that's about it. The 12GB of RAM feels a bit thin, especially compared to its percentile ranking.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- The port selection is insane. Four USB-A ports in 2024? That's a 98th percentile win. 98th
- The integrated GPU is shockingly good for a Chromebook, making media consumption super smooth. 98th
- It's lightweight and portable, easy to toss in a bag. 96th
- The touchscreen and 2-in-1 design are handy for casual use. 82th
Cons
- It's a Chromebook. You're stuck with web apps and Android apps, which is a major limitation. 9th
- The 256GB storage is painfully small and lands in the bottom 12th percentile. 22th
- The reliability score is abysmal at the 8th percentile. That's a big red flag. 32th
- The screen is just okay. At 300 nits, it'll struggle in bright rooms.

Value & Pricing
At $699, this is a tough sell. You're paying a premium for the convertible form factor and those ports, but you're getting a machine with serious software limitations and questionable reliability. For the same money, you could find a much more capable Windows laptop. The value just isn't there unless your entire workflow exists inside Chrome.
Price History
vs Competition
Forget comparing it to gaming laptops like the MSI Vector. The real competition is other portable machines. The ASUS Zenbook Duo gives you a dual-screen Windows laptop for more versatility. The Lenovo ThinkPad P14s is a proper, reliable business laptop. Even a base model iPad Pro with a keyboard offers a better app ecosystem and a far superior screen. This Acer only wins if your top priority is having a ton of USB-A ports on a lightweight Chrome device.

Verdict
I can't recommend the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 514 for most people. It's too expensive for what is essentially a fancy web browser with good ports. The low reliability score is the final nail in the coffin. If you absolutely need a Chromebook and need lots of legacy ports, maybe consider it. For everyone else, spend your $699 on a proper laptop or a tablet. This one tries to be a jack-of-all-trades but ends up being a master of none.
