Sony Alpha a7S III Full Frame Mirrorless Digital Interchangeable Lens Camera Body Review

This is a Ferrari for filmmakers, but a bicycle for photographers. Buy it only if your paycheck comes from video.

The Sony a7S III is a video camera disguised as a mirrorless body. Forget the 12.1MP sensor for stills, because this thing is built to make movies. The one thing you need to know is that it's a specialist tool, and if you're not shooting video professionally, you're paying for a Ferrari to drive to the grocery store. It's bundled with Sony's excellent 24-70mm f/2.8 GM lens, which is a fantastic piece of glass, but that just makes the whole package even more of a niche proposition.

What surprised us was how the sensor ranking, which is dead last for still photography, is actually the secret sauce. That low-resolution 12.1MP full-frame sensor is designed for speed and low noise, not detail. It allows for that insane 4K 120p video and a massive ISO range. The trade-off is brutal for photographers, but for videographers, it's the reason this camera exists. The build quality and stabilization are top-tier, which you'd expect for a $5,400 kit.

For a professional videographer or filmmaker who needs reliable, high-quality internal recording, this bundle is worth every penny. The lens alone is a $2,000 value. For anyone else, especially photographers, it's a terrible value. You're spending $5,400 on a camera with a sensor that ranks among the worst we've seen for image detail.

If you need a hybrid camera, the Sony a7 IV is the obvious choice. It has a modern 33MP sensor, better autofocus, and costs half as much. For pure video, the Canon EOS R6 Mark II offers fantastic video specs at a much lower price point, though it lacks the a7S III's extreme low-light pedigree. The Nikon Z9 is a better comparison for high-end video pros, but it's even more expensive and built for a different kind of shooter.

If you're looking for a camera to take great pictures, this isn't it. Go get a Sony a7 IV instead. If you're a hobbyist filmmaker, this is also not it. The Canon EOS R6 Mark II or Sony a7C II will give you 95% of the quality for way less money and complexity.

We can't recommend this bundle to most people. It's a hyper-specialized tool. If you are a working videographer who demands the specific combination of low-light performance, high frame rate 4K, and internal 10-bit codecs, then yes, buy it. The included lens makes it a sensible kit. If you're a photographer, a hybrid shooter, or a content creator who doesn't need those extreme specs, there are dozens of better, cheaper cameras that will serve you better.
