AstrHori 25mm f/2.8 2-5x Ultra Macro Review

The Canon AstrHori 25mm f/2.8 is a one-trick pony, but man, what a trick. If you want to photograph the individual hairs on a fly's leg or the crystalline structure of a snowflake, this is your lens. Forget everything else. It's a dedicated, manual-focus macro lens that goes from 2:1 to a wild 5:1 magnification, and that's the only thing you need to know. It's not here to be your walk-around lens or your portrait lens. It's here to get you closer than you've ever been.

The sheer magnification is the obvious star, but what surprised me was how manageable it is to use. At 454g, it's not a featherweight, but it's far from the monster you might expect for this level of macro. The manual focus is smooth and precise, which is absolutely essential when your depth of field at 5x magnification is measured in microns. You won't miss autofocus here because it would be useless anyway.

At $249, it's a steal for a dedicated macro shooter. You're paying for one specific, extreme capability, and it delivers that without any fuss. If 5x macro is what you need, nothing else near this price point even comes close.

Don't confuse this with lenses like the Viltrox 35mm f/1.7 or Meike 55mm f/1.8. Those are autofocus primes that can do portraits and street photography. They're versatile. The AstrHori 25mm is the opposite. It's a specialist. The only real competitor is another ultra-macro lens, and for Canon RF shooters at this price, there isn't one. You'd have to look at much more expensive options from Laowa or Canon's own MP-E 65mm, which costs over four times as much.

Buy this lens if you are obsessed with extreme macro photography and shoot on Canon RF. It's a brilliant, affordable tool for a very specific job. For everyone else—travel shooters, portrait photographers, generalists—skip it completely. It will just collect dust on your shelf.
