The ASUS ROG Strix G17 is a big-screen gaming laptop that makes a weird first impression. It's got a powerful AMD CPU and a decent 144Hz screen, but then it pairs them with a weak RTX 3050 and a laughably small 16GB SSD. The one thing to know? This is a classic case of a laptop that looks good on paper until you check the fine print. It's built for gaming, but the GPU and storage are already holding it back.
Performance
The performance is a real mixed bag. The AMD Ryzen 7 6800H is a solid workhorse, landing in the 63rd percentile for CPU power, so everyday tasks and multi-threaded work feel snappy. The real surprise, and not a good one, is the storage. A 16GB SSD is basically unusable in 2024. Windows 11 will eat most of that, leaving you with no room for games. The RTX 3050 is okay for older or less demanding titles at 1080p, but that 4GB of VRAM is a serious bottleneck for anything new.

Value & Pricing
Worth it? Only if you find it at the absolute bottom of its price range, around $990, and you're willing to immediately spend another $50-$100 to swap in a proper 1TB SSD. At the high end of $1570, it's a terrible value. You're paying a premium for the ROG Strix name while getting crippled by its base specs.
Price History
vs Competition
Compared to other gaming laptops, it's outclassed. The Lenovo Legion Pro 7i in the same general price range will give you a much more powerful GPU and proper storage. Even the MSI Vector 16 HX is a more balanced machine. If you just want a big screen for entertainment, an ASUS Zenbook Duo offers far better portability and battery life. For creators, the Apple MacBook Pro is in another league entirely, but also costs way more. This ROG Strix is stuck in an awkward middle ground.
Verdict
I can't recommend the ASUS ROG Strix G17 as configured. The core idea of a big, fast screen with a good CPU is ruined by the anemic RTX 3050 and the unusable 16GB SSD. It's a project laptop, not a ready-to-game machine. Only consider it if you find it heavily discounted and you're comfortable opening it up to replace the SSD on day one. For most people, there are better options.
