OM System M.Zuiko Digital ED 75-300mm f/4.8-6.7 II Review

The Olympus 75-300mm packs a 600mm punch into a tiny, 423-gram body. The optics are sharp, but the slow f/4.8 aperture and lack of stabilization are real compromises.

Overview

The Olympus M.Zuiko 75-300mm is a super-telephoto lens that's all about reach without the bulk. It gives you a 150-600mm equivalent zoom in a package that weighs just 423 grams, so you can actually carry it all day.

It's built for Micro Four Thirds cameras, and its optical performance is surprisingly sharp for its class, landing in the 95th percentile. Just don't expect it to be a low-light or portrait bokeh champion.

Performance

The optics are the star here. Sharpness and versatility scores are in the 90th percentile, so your long-distance shots will look crisp. But there are clear trade-offs. The autofocus is just average (47th percentile), and it has no image stabilization. The constant f/4.8 aperture is also pretty dim, putting it in the bottom 20% for low-light and background blur. It's a bright-day, long-lens specialist.

Value & Pricing

At around $500, it's a solid value if your main goal is maximum reach on a budget. You're paying for the optics and the portability, and you're giving up features like stabilization and a fast aperture. For a dedicated wildlife or travel shooter on MFT, it makes a lot of sense. For anyone else, the compromises might be too big.

vs Competition

This lens is in a weird spot. It's not competing with those fast prime lenses in the competitor list, like the Viltrox 35mm f/1.7. Those are for low-light and portraits. Its real competition is other super-zooms. Compared to something like the Panasonic 100-300mm, you trade a bit of aperture speed for more reach. And compared to a heavier, pricier pro lens, you get the portability but lose weather sealing and stabilization. It's the 'I need it to be small' choice.

Verdict

Buy this if you're an MFT shooter who needs a super-telephoto for travel or wildlife and absolutely prioritizes light weight above all else. The image quality is there in good light. But if you shoot in dim conditions, need stabilization, or want creamy background blur, look at a faster prime or a more premium zoom.
