Canon EOS M50 Mirrorless Review

This $3200 Canon M50 bundle pairs a beginner camera with a pro lens. It's a confusing kit that's hard to recommend for the price.

Overview

So, you're looking at a Canon M50 bundle. It's a white mirrorless camera that comes with a kit lens, an adapter, a pro-grade EF 24-70mm f/2.8L lens, and a memory card. That's a lot of gear in one box.

But here's the thing. The M50 itself is a pretty basic camera. It's fine for casual shooting, but it's not built for anything demanding. The bundle is weird because it pairs a beginner camera with a heavy, expensive pro lens.

Performance

Performance is just okay across the board. The autofocus and sensor are both below average for mirrorless cameras. Video quality lands in the 32nd percentile, so it's not great for that. And it has no in-body stabilization, which hurts for video and low-light photos. It's weakest for vlogging, scoring only a 10.6 out of 100 there. The burst shooting is slow too, in the 39th percentile.

Value & Pricing

This bundle is priced at $3200, which is insane for what you're getting. You're paying for the pro lens and adapter, not the M50 body. If you already own that lens, buying this bundle makes zero sense. You could get a much better camera body for that kind of money.

vs Competition

Compared to other cameras near this price, it's a bad deal. The Sony a6400 is a much better video and autofocus camera for way less money. The Fujifilm X-S20 has great video and stabilization. Even Canon's own EOS R6 Mark II is a full-frame powerhouse. The Pentax K-3 Mark III is a rugged DSLR, but it's a different system. This M50 bundle just doesn't compete.

Verdict

Only buy this if you desperately need that specific 24-70mm f/2.8L lens and the adapter, and you're getting a massive discount on the bundle. For everyone else, especially vloggers or serious photographers, skip it. Put that $3200 towards a better camera body first.
