Samyang Samyang 16mm f/2.0 ED AS UMC CS Lens for Nikon Review

The Samyang 16mm f/2.0 is a sharp, heavy manual-focus prime that's fantastic for macro but awful for almost everything else. It's a tool, not a lens.

Overview

This Samyang 16mm f/2.0 is a weirdly specific lens, and that's its whole point. It's a heavy, manual-focus-only prime designed for Nikon APS-C DSLRs, and it's shockingly good at close-up photography. Forget travel or general use. If you want to shoot tiny subjects on a tripod with incredible detail, this is your oddly-shaped hammer for that very specific nail.

Performance

The optical performance is genuinely impressive, landing in the 81st percentile. For a lens that's this heavy and this manual, you get sharp, detailed images, especially for macro work where it scores an 80th percentile. The surprise is how bad it is for anything else. The lack of autofocus and stabilization, plus its bulk, makes it a terrible walk-around lens, which is exactly why its 'travel' score is a dismal 40.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Optical quality is top-tier for the price, especially sharpness. 84th
  • Fantastic for dedicated macro and close-up work. 75th
  • Solid f/2.0 aperture gives you good light gathering and background separation. 73th
  • Build feels hefty and durable, if you like that. 69th

Cons

  • No autofocus. At all. This is a manual-only lens.
  • It's a brick. At 572g, it's heavier than many full-frame zooms.
  • No image stabilization, so you need a tripod or very steady hands.
  • Extremely niche. Terrible for travel, video, or casual shooting.

Value & Pricing

At $371, it's a tough sell unless you're deep into a specific type of photography. You're paying for excellent optics in a package that sacrifices every modern convenience. If you need autofocus or versatility, this lens is a hard pass. If you're a macro enthusiast with a Nikon APS-C DSLR who doesn't mind manual focus, it's a unique and powerful tool.

vs Competition

Don't even look at zooms like the Panasonic 14-140mm or Sony 24-240mm; they're in a different universe of convenience. For a Nikon shooter, the real question is this versus something like the Viltrox 35mm f/1.7. The Viltrox has autofocus, is much lighter, and is far more versatile for portraits and general use, but it won't touch this Samyang's macro prowess. The Meike 55mm f/1.8 is another AF option, but it's for full-frame. This Samyang only makes sense if macro detail is your absolute top priority and you're willing to work for it.

Verdict

I can only recommend this lens to a very specific photographer: the Nikon APS-C DSLR user who shoots mostly static macro subjects on a tripod and doesn't care about autofocus. For everyone else—especially anyone who values portability, autofocus, or shooting handheld—there are better, more modern options that won't feel like a chore to use. It's a brilliant specialist, but a frustrating generalist.
