AstrHori 25mm f/2.8 2-5x Ultra Macro Review

The AstrHori 25mm f/2.8 is a specialist's tool. It's a manual focus lens built for one thing: getting insanely close. With a 5:1 maximum magnification, it lets you capture details most lenses can't even see.

Forget about autofocus or stabilization. This is a simple, all-manual prime lens for Nikon Z cameras. It's designed to be mounted on a tripod so you can carefully focus on tiny subjects like insect eyes or watch gears.

For macro work, it's in the 97th percentile, which is its whole reason for existing. The optical quality is decent, landing in the 65th percentile. But you trade everything else for that magnification. The build is just okay, and it's not versatile at all. It's slow to use because of the manual focus, and you'll need a lot of light or a flash at such high magnifications.

At $249, it's a relatively cheap ticket into extreme macro photography. You're not paying for fancy features, you're paying for magnification. If 5:1 macro is your goal, this is one of the most affordable ways to get there on a Nikon Z system. Just know you're getting a bare-bones tool.

Don't confuse this with general-purpose primes like the Viltrox 35mm f/1.7 or Meike 55mm f/1.8. Those have autofocus and are for portraits or street photography. This AstrHori lens is in a different league for close-ups. Compared to dedicated macro lenses from Nikon or Sigma that offer 1:1 magnification, this goes much closer but sacrifices autofocus, stabilization, and optical polish. It's for a different, more extreme job.

Buy this only if you're a photographer, scientist, or hobbyist who specifically needs to shoot at 2x to 5x magnification. It's perfect for documenting tiny specimens, circuit boards, or jewelry details. If you want a walk-around lens or something for portraits, look at the Viltrox or Meike options instead. This is a one-trick pony, but it does that trick very well.
