Sony SEL50F18 Compact ILC Lenses 50mm f/1.8 Review
The Sony 50mm f/1.8 feels premium and has great stabilization, but its autofocus is just okay and it's not versatile. It's a solid choice only for a very specific user.
Overview
This Sony 50mm f/1.8 is a weird little lens. It's built like a tank and has great stabilization, but the autofocus is just okay and it's not very versatile. The one thing you need to know? It's a solid, stabilized portrait lens for Sony APS-C cameras, but it feels like it's from a different era compared to newer options.
Performance
What surprised me is how much the performance depends on what you're doing. For video or street photography, it scores in the low 80s, which is pretty good. But try to use it for anything close-up and it falls apart, landing in the bottom 40% for macro. The stabilization is fantastic (91st percentile), but the autofocus is merely average, which can be frustrating for fast-moving subjects.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Build quality is excellent (92nd percentile). It feels premium. 92th
- Optical SteadyShot stabilization is top-tier and a huge plus for video. 88th
- Compact and light at 206g, so it's easy to carry all day. 76th
- The f/1.8 aperture gives you nice background blur for portraits. 69th
Cons
- Autofocus is just middle-of-the-road. It's not slow, but it's not snappy either.
- Very poor for close-up shots. Don't even think about macro work with this.
- Not versatile at all (38th percentile). It's a one-trick pony.
- No weather sealing, which is a bummer for a lens that feels this solid.

Value & Pricing
At $300 to $400, it's a tough sell. You're paying for great build and stabilization, but you're compromising on autofocus and versatility. If those two things are your top priorities, it's worth it. For most people, there are better values out there.
Price History
vs Competition
The Viltrox 35mm f/1.7 is a direct competitor. It's wider, which is better for street photography, and it's likely cheaper. You'll lose the excellent stabilization, but you might gain faster autofocus. The Sony FE 24-240mm superzoom is the opposite choice. It's bigger and heavier, but its massive zoom range crushes this 50mm for versatility. Pick the Sony 50mm if you absolutely need stabilization in a prime lens and shoot mostly portraits or video. Otherwise, look at the Viltrox for street or the zoom for flexibility.

Verdict
This is a niche recommendation. If you own a Sony APS-C camera and you specifically want a well-built, stabilized prime lens for portraits or handheld video, this Sony 50mm f/1.8 does that job well. For anyone else, especially those who value fast autofocus or like to shoot a variety of subjects, you can find a better, more modern lens for your money. It's good at what it does, but what it does is pretty limited.
