The Pentax WG-1000 is a camera built for one thing: to survive. It's waterproof, dustproof, and shockproof, so you can take it places you'd never dream of bringing a regular camera. It's got a 16MP sensor and a 4x optical zoom, which is fine for basic shots. But this isn't a camera for amazing image quality. It's a camera for not worrying about your camera.

Image quality is just okay. The sensor lands in the 34th percentile, so don't expect miracles. The 1080p video is basic and there's no stabilization, so clips can get shaky. The autofocus is middle-of-the-road at the 45th percentile. It's not fast, but it gets the job done for casual snaps. Where it shines is the build, which is in the 98th percentile. This thing is a tank.

At around $227, it's a tough call. You're paying almost entirely for the rugged body. For that price, you could get a used older smartphone that takes better pictures and is also water-resistant. But if you need a dedicated device you can truly abuse without a second thought, the WG-1000 has a specific kind of value.

This isn't competing with the Canon R6 or Sony A6700. Those are serious cameras. For a rugged shooter, look at the Olympus Tough TG-6, which often has better image processing. The WG-1000 is more of a direct alternative to older GoPro models for stills. Compared to a modern phone, it loses on image quality and speed but wins on pure, drop-it-off-a-cliff durability.

Buy this only if your top priority is a camera you can literally not baby. It's perfect for kayaking, construction sites, or giving to a kid. If you care more about photo quality than survival, even a budget smartphone is a better choice. This is a niche tool for a specific, rough job.
