Viltrox 9mm F2.8 APS-C Review
The Viltrox 9mm F2.8 is a specialist's tool, not for everyone. It's heavy and not versatile, but its close-focus ability is incredible for creative shots.
Overview
The Viltrox 9mm F2.8 is a weird, wonderful, and surprisingly heavy lens. It's not for everyone, but if you're looking for an ultra-wide that gets freakishly close to your subject, this is your pick. The one thing to know is that it's a specialist's tool, not a walk-around lens. It's built for dramatic, distorted perspectives and creative close-ups, not for general shooting.
Performance
What surprised me was how good it is at macro. It scores in the 98th percentile for close-up work, which is wild for a 9mm lens. You can shove it 0.13m from a subject and get these crazy, wide-angle shots with exaggerated depth. The stabilization is also solid, landing in the 87th percentile, which helps a lot since you'll be hand-holding this chunky lens for those low-light F2.8 shots.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Insane close-focus capability for creative wide-angle macro. 99th
- Excellent image stabilization for a third-party lens. 92th
- Sharp optics that control distortion well for the price. 88th
- F2.8 aperture is useful for indoor and low-light scenes. 83th
Cons
- It's heavy. At 414g, it feels like a brick on smaller Fuji bodies.
- Autofocus is just okay, scoring below average (46th percentile).
- Not versatile. It's a one-trick pony for ultra-wide perspectives.
- No weather sealing, so keep it away from the elements.

Value & Pricing
At $199, it's a steal for what it does. You're getting a unique creative tool for the price of a mediocre zoom lens. If your goal is creative wide-angle or close-up shots, the value is fantastic. If you want a general-purpose lens, it's a waste of money.
vs Competition
Don't confuse this with the Viltrox 35mm F1.7 or 25mm F1.7. Those are standard primes for portraits and everyday use. This 9mm is a completely different beast. For a more versatile ultra-wide option on Fuji, you'd need to look at something like the Fujifilm XF 10-24mm, but you'll pay three or four times the price and lose the crazy close-focus ability. This lens carves out its own niche.

Verdict
Buy this lens for one reason: you want to take wild, close-up, ultra-wide photos. It's not a travel lens (its 45.9/100 score proves that), and it's not a portrait lens. It's a creative specialty tool that does its one job extremely well for a very fair price. If that job is on your shot list, get it. If not, look elsewhere.
