HP ProBook 440 G7 Laptop | 14" Review

The HP ProBook 440 G7 is a budget laptop that fails at the basics. Its outdated 2-core processor and meager 8GB of RAM make it a frustrating machine for any real work.

Overview

Look, the HP ProBook 440 G7 is a cheap laptop that tries to do a lot of things, but it doesn't do any of them particularly well. It's got a touchscreen and Windows 11 Pro, which is nice, but that's about where the good news ends. The one thing you need to know is that this is a budget machine through and through, and it feels like it in every single spec.

Performance

Honestly, nothing surprised me in a good way. The performance is exactly what you'd expect from a 2-core Intel CPU and 8GB of RAM in 2024: slow. It lands in the 9th percentile for CPU power, which means it's slower than over 90% of other laptops. Opening more than a few browser tabs will have it wheezing. The integrated graphics are predictably bad too, sitting in the 18th percentile. Don't even think about gaming.

Value & Pricing

For $169, you're getting exactly what you pay for: a very basic, underpowered laptop. It's only worth it if your budget is rock-solid and your needs are incredibly light—think checking email and watching a single YouTube video at a time. Anything more and you'll regret it.

vs Competition

For a similar price, you could find a used or refurbished business laptop like a Lenovo ThinkPad from a few years ago that would have a much better keyboard, more ports, and likely a more powerful quad-core CPU. If you can stretch your budget even a little, a modern Chromebook or a base model iPad would offer a significantly smoother and more reliable experience for students or casual use. The MacBook Pro and gaming laptops on the competitor list are in a completely different universe and not relevant here.

Verdict

I can't recommend the HP ProBook 440 G7. It's built from outdated, low-tier parts that struggle with basic tasks today, let alone tomorrow. The terrible reliability score is a huge red flag. Save up a bit more money and buy something else. Anything else.
